Freddie and the Dreamers remain at #1 for a second week while The Supremes are still strong, holding down the #2 spot for the second week in a row, after spending the previous two weeks at #1 themselves.
Check out the highest debuting single of the week ...
It's Herman's Hermits' "Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter," premiering at #20 in its first week on the charts! (I don't think we've ever seen one debut this high before!)
A sure-fire smash, it's destined to become their second #1 Single here in The States ... which is really saying something when one considers that this record wasn't even released as a single back home in Jolly Ol' England!
Drop down another seven spots and you'll see their OTHER Top 40 Hit racing up the charts as "Silhouettes" jumps from #99 to #49 to #27 in its third week on the chart. They may be doing battle for the top stop between themselves in another week or two! And both of these are in addition to their THIRD hit on the chart this week, as "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat" is still well-placed in The Top Ten at #6! (This is Beatle-like chart domination from a year ago!)
LOTS of British acts on the chart again this week ...
Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, Petula Clark, The Kinks and The Moody Blues also hold down Top Ten status, giving British acts six of this week's Top Ten Singles.
Not far behind in The Top 20 you'll find The Seekers, The Rolling Stones, Shirley Bassey and The Beatles, followed by The Searchers, Sounds Orchestral, Marianne Faithfull, Chad and Jeremy and Gerry and the Pacemakers, all in The Top 40.
While several of these British artists have some of the biggest movers of the weeks, we also have to acknowledge Gary Lewis and the Playboys, up 28 spots with "Count Me In," The Temptations up 21 places with "It's Growing," The Righteous Brothers, who move up 24 spots with "Just Once In My Life," "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, up 20 notches to #56, Sam Cooke, who moves up 24 spots with his posthumous release "It's Got The Whole World Shakin'" and then, back to The Brits for a moment, a BIG tip of the hat to Gerry and the Pacemakers and Tom Jones, who make SIGNIFICANT moves this week with "It's Gonna Be Alright" (#95 to #57) and "It's Not Unusual" (#94 to #62) respectively!
And I've always been partial to Peter and Gordon's version of the Buddy Holly classic "True Love Ways" ... which premiers at #92 this week ... without a bullet!!! (That'll change!)
