THE SATURDAY SURVEY / and 60 YEARS AGO TODAY (June 27, 1966)

"Paperback Writer" holds on to the #1 spot for a second week while "Strangers In The Night" holds at #2 but loses its bullet.

"Hanky Panky" continues its surge up the chart ... it now sits at #5, up from #13 the week before.

Crispian St. Peters' "The Pied Piper" continues its stride as well ... this week, it's up another 25 points to reach #30.  "Wild Thing" makes a similar move from #72 to #39.  Meanwhile, "Li'l Red Riding Hood"  is up 15 places to #36 and last week's top debut, "Hungry" by Paul Revere and the Raiders, makes a 20 point move.

This week's top debut belongs to The Mamas and the Papas ... "I Saw Her Again" premiers at #56, just ahead of "Love Letters" by Elvis and "The Work Song" by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

 

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

6/27/66 – The very first Mothers of Invention album (“Freak Out!”) is released.  It is one of the earliest double-albums released by a rock artist … and some say it very well may also be the first “concept” album ever recorded


Also on 6/27, writer, producer and director J.J. Abrams is born


Also on 6/27, the vampire soap opera “Dark Shadows” premiers on ABC
