The Friday Flash (Weekend Comments, Part One)

re: THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME NOMINEES:
The 2013 Nominees have just been announced ... congratulations to The Marvelettes, Donna Summer, Heart, Procol Harum, Deep Purple, Chic, the Meters, Albert King, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Kraftwerk, Randy Newman, Rush, Joan Jett, Public Enemy and NWA.
We'd also like to pass along another round of "Who Needs Ya" snubs to Chicago, The Guess Who, The Moody Blues, Linda Ronstadt and all the others who make our Deserving And Denied List every year, only to be continually denied by The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, saluting instead artists like Kraftwerk (who had ONE semi-hit techno album that has made absolutely NO lasting impression on the evolution of rock and roll), The Meters (huh?), BLUES Artists Albert King and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and NWA.
Heart, Joan Jett and Donna Summer were among the nominees in last year's voting. Summer, who died last May, and Chic were also nominated in 2010. (Davy Jones, who died in February, was also ignored for his efforts with The Monkees, a long-standing, timeless, fan favorite.)  Winners should be announced in January with the actual induction ceremony taking place April 18 in Los Angeles.
WTG, Jann Wenner ... you've done it again! Proven how little WE know about music ... as it relates to YOUR world, rather than the actual world of music at large. (kk)

Wow! Jann Wenner's going to toss fans a bone in this year's Hall of Fame election. You can now vote for his pathetic list of nominees. Then collectively you'll be counted as ONE VOTE along with the 600 members of the blue ribbon panel (most of whom don't bother to vote because they know Jann will have his say anyways -- like the year he inducted Grandmaster Flash instead of Dave Clark). No write-ins allowed (or none of Jann's picks would make it): Fans can vote for Jann's pathetic list at: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/vote-for-the-2013-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-inductees-20121004
-- Ron Smith

So if, by some miracle, two million people went over to Jann Wenner's site and voted for their favorites from amongst this list ... those two million votes would count as ONE vote out of 600?!?!? Yep, that seems fair. Ahh, progress! Do me a favor ... if anybody goes to the site, cast a vote for me for Heart ... they seem to be one of the only legitimate rock and roll acts on the list again this year. Fans who have campaigned for years to see Deep Purple's name on the ballot should be thrilled ... they certainly were a rock and roll band ... ditto for Rush. (Oh my gosh, there must be some sort of mistake ... a CANADIAN artist got nominated! Of course it wasn't The Guess Who, who came nearly a decade before but hey, at least SOMEBODY from Canada finally got nominated.) Procol Harum is an interesting choice ... classical rock finally gets recognized (which would have made The Electric Light Orchestra a pretty good choice, too) ... and hey, Joan Jett LOVED rock and roll, so I guess she belongs there, right? (Joan Jett gets nominated but Linda Ronstadt doesn't?  I must be living in a parallel universe somewhere.) Kraftwerk were a techno band, The Meters were sort of R&B (in a Booker T. and the MG's-wannabe sort of way) ... and The Marvelettes are one of the few Motown acts that haven't already been recognized ... Albert King and The Paul Butterfield Blues Band were blues artists ... Donna Summer and Chic were disco. And Randy Newman?!?!? Sure, he belongs ... in a Leonard Cohen sort of way. (NOT!) And you can't DEFINE Rock And Roll and not mention Public Enemy and NWA, right???  Rock and Roll was derived from the roots of R&B ... and what used to be called "Race Music" ... so how can you possibly NOT rightfully induct a group called "Niggaz With Attitude"?!?!? (kk)

Here's the new list of nominees for this year's R&R Hall of Fame. Who / What is N.W.A.?
I almost "le-Freak-ed" when I saw Chic!
Paul Buttersfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Heart, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Albert King, Kraftwerk, The Marvelettes, The Meters, Randy Newman, N.W.A., Procol Harum, Public Enemy, Rush, Donna Summer
So many more deserving are still shut out. And yet, I cannot help but be reminded of the Intruders' "(Love is Like a) Baseball Game" this year!
Could the Coachmen, Smoke Ring, Cryan Shames be "ALTERNATE CHOICES"???
This year for the first time, FANS actually have a squeaky little voice (maybe) in the outcome of these choices!
http://bsnpubs.websitetoolbox.com/post/Rock-And-Roll-Hall-Of-Fame-Wants-Your-Input-6035130?pid=1275219942#post1275219942
OK, I just watched the video and now I am "le-freaking" out that NWA is in the list for sure. In 10 years, will all Hiphop and rap Gods be the inductees?
OK, so they are NOT letting us choose the nominees, just choose from the above list of Atlantic Records artists. OOPS, sorry, my bad, just a slip of the tongue there. Just because 80% of the Hall recorded for Atlantic and 99% of those who deserve to be in did NOT record for Atlantic is no reason to think the fix is in. Of course not. "The Fixx" can't be in because they did NOT record for ATL, so the fix would NOT be in! Haha.
You can view the fan voter results as of now on the voting site and for the most part, the top 5 seem to be decent choices, at least. Rush leading with almost double Deep Purple and Heart.

Kent,
Since you're always wound up over the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame I thought I'd stir the pot a little. It was great to see a few well deserved nominations for 2013. But give me a break!! Public Enemy?!?!? Why don't they just change their name to Rock & Crap Hall of Fame? And who or what is N.W.A? Actually I do know they're a hip hop group that is known for their gangsta wrap. And what do the letters NWA mean? Sorry, I won't even go there ... you can look that up on the internet. I'm not going to rehash what's already been said several times on Forgotten Hits. Suffice to say that I'm in your camp on this.
Steve

What is the deal with you people?!?!? And you call yourselves music fans?!?!?  C'mon ... ANYBODY who knows ANYTHING about rock and roll music knows who NWA are! It's one of the first names that rolls off your tongue during ANY rock and roll discussion!!! See what I mean? If an artist made a revolutionary, game-changing contribution to the evolution of rock music, then why is it that every single year Wenner comes up with a name that NOBODY knows, while ignoring some of the biggest and most influential names in rock and roll history? Interesting to see in Clark's letter above that the three leaders in the PUBLIC vote are the legitimate ROCK acts on the list. Who would have EVER thought that THAT is what The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame was supposed to be about!!! (kk)

Here's how Doug describes his upcoming appearance on my show:
Hi folks,
This Friday night (Oct. 5th) I’ll be performing live and will be interviewed on an Internet “Radio” Show called “The Pop Shoppe” from 8:00 to 10:00 PM.

The host of the program is Stuart Weiss.
“The Pop Shoppe” is basically an “oldies” show that I first discovered back in 1987 or so when it was broadcasting from a station in Hazlet, NJ. It was a very local station whose power did not reach very far. It could occasionally reach Morganville, where I was living at the time, but to hear it a bit better I would get in my car and drive toward Hazlet, usually cruising around Matawan for a while, where the signal would be stronger.
What was really fun for me was to call in “requests” FROM MY CAR, which was a very big deal in 1987, since I had one of the real early cell phones installed in my car (to aid me in marketing of a business project I had going that year). The pertinent word is “installed” - the cell phone weighed about 10 pounds back then, looking very much like a military battlefield radio from WWII, and it was mounted in brackets in the trunk, with the handset up front by the driver’s seat. This was the “state of the art” for cell phones in 1987.
In the 90’s, I would catch Stu’s program occasionally when commuting back and forth to Princeton, where I was doing a lot of bus driving for the American Boy Choir. About half way between Princeton and Wanamassa, on I-195, his show would occasionally come in on my radio for about 10 minutes on each side of where I-195 crossed Rt. 9 – Stu had moved to another local station based in Howell, NJ.
A few years ago, after not having “crossed trails” with The Pop Shoppe for several years, I decided to see where Stu’s current location (if any) might be by searching the internet. I quickly discovered that The Pop Shoppe had become an internet broadcast.
Thanks to the power of the Internet, Stu’s audience for The Pop Shoppe now extends coast to coast, as well as worldwide, with regular listeners tuning in from Japan, Australia, Canada and other surprising places.
If you like “oldies”, it is a good place to tune in between 7:00 PM and 3:01 AM on Friday /Saturday. Stu goes way beyond just the typical “oldies” play list of stations like, for example, 101.1 FM used to play. He delves into the discography of various artists, often playing some of their less-played, or even obscure, songs. He sometimes goes back into the 40’s and 30’s to play some of the artists who started trends that reached their fruition in the 50’s or 60’s. He gets into some esoteric themes, even some very wacky ones. But, if you like music, it is fun and endlessly interesting. By the way, don’t count on any two Fridays to be similar. He has an archive of THOUSANDS of records, tapes and CDs to draw from.
One of the things Stu does is to discuss the history of groups and individual artists, often having them visit his studio for live interviews and performances.
I am thrilled that I am going to be one of those artists singing and interviewing this coming Friday night.
I hope you will be able to spend some time with us, on the internet, between 8:00 and 10:00 PM.
Just go to this web page: http://www.oldiesyourway.com/Oldies_Your_Way_Radio/Home.html
Look for the “Stream Licensing.com” page and the words “Tune In”.
Pick the music player that works best in your computer.
And, most importantly, have fun!Be COOL! Be THERE!
Doug Alt
Remember!!! You must be here Friday night because I don't want to be alone.
Sincerely,
Stuart Weiss (DJ STU)

MICKY DOLENZ, LEAD SINGER AND DRUMMER OF THE MONKEES WILL GIVE FANS SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO MEET HIM AT J&R MUSIC WORLD CD SIGNING, NYC, OCTOBER 17
DOLENZ WILL ALSO PERFORM A SOLO SHOW AT BB KINGS, OCTOBER 19TH, TO BE RECORDED FOR FUTURE LIVE ALBUM RELEASE
Micky Dolenz, will be in NYC from October 14th - 20th and has just confirmed a CD signing at J&R Music World on Wednesday, October 17th, starting at 12:30 pm. On October 19th he'll play a very special show at BB King's which will be recorded for a later Live Album release. Micky just released his new album, Remember (Waterfront Ent. Group / RoboRecords and Universal Music Distribution), which features many songs that mark great milestones in his life, as well as some new songs that offer insight as to where the artist is now. This album was released worldwide on September 25, 2012 with a launch party at Capitol Studios in LA September 26. Press response has already been tremendously supportive including features in the LA Times, AOL Spinner and the lead in a roundup in USA TODAY. This has been an enormously busy time for Micky, who in addition to this solo release and tour, has been rehearsing for a Monkees reunion tour which kicks off in November.
Produced and largely arranged by David Harris, Remember promises classic tunes that will evoke some cherished memories from listeners of all ages. Dolenz opens up a time capsule of pop hits from decades ago, updating them with a tone that is reminiscent of his younger days as a Monkee and appreciative of the music that continues to inspire him.
The lyrics of the warm ballad, “Remember,” encapsulate this nostalgia—“Remember is a place from long ago / Filled with everything you know / Life is just a memory / Close your eyes and you can see / Think of all that life can be.”
"Remember had just been finished when we heard the tragic news of Davy Jones' passing" added Rob Christie, President of Robo Records/Waterfront Ent. "which made the theme all the more poignant for Micky."
The track list of Remember portrays an “audio scrapbook of the important songs in my life that had meant something to me for one reason or another,” according to Dolenz. He incorporates new versions of classic songs, re-imagined. The original writers of these songs range from some of his pals to The Beatles, Carole King, Harry Nilsson, and Neil Diamond.
One of Dolenz’ most exciting memories lies behind his cover of The Beatles’ “Good Morning Good Morning.” He reminisces, “One day, Paul [McCartney] invited me down to Abbey Road studios for a new album they were doing [Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band]. I must have expected some kind crazy, love-festival, Beatlemania event so I got dressed accordingly. I must have looked like a cross between Ronald McDonald and Charles Manson!” He was surprised when he got to the studio, since it had plain white walls and the only people there were the Fab Four in jeans and t-shirts, just playing their music. John Lennon called out, “Hey Monkee Man!” and offered to play Dolenz a song they had been working on… “Good Morning Good Morning.” This song was “burned into my neural pathways forever,” he says. And now he performs his own version of it as the lead track on Remember.Remember also features a cover of the Chuck Berry classic, “Johnny B. Goode,” in homage to the start of his Monkees career. “The song was my audition piece for The Monkees, and that’s the song that got me the gig which changed my life forever.” After The Monkees began skyrocketing, Dolenz developed his musical personality even further.
“Several of these tracks are songs that I had been offered [in the past] by incredible song writers and I had turned them down for some stupid reason or another. They went on to become big hits for other artists,” according to Dolenz. For example, “‘Sugar Sugar’ was supposed to be the next Monkees song.” It was the song that caused a historic revolt between The Monkees and their producers. Of course, it went on to become a huge number one hit for the Archies … a cartoon band! Dolenz explains, “I never wanted to do the song, but producer David Harris did an incredible arrangement for this new album and talked me into it. It’s now become one of my favorites on the album!”
Dolenz felt he couldn’t have released this album without including his most famous vocal track of The Monkees, “I’m a Believer,” written by Neil Diamond. “The song became such an important track in my career.” In the re-imagined version on Remember, Dolenz wanted to do something completely different with it. “I’ve always wanted to do a country version of this song, and this was my opportunity. And yes, kids … I recorded this long before Shrek,” Dolenz jokes.
For Micky Dolenz, the friendship that evolved along with the music-making magic was another inspiration for the theme of this album. “We hit upon the title ‘Remember’ because of my dear friend Harry Nilsson, who I was very close to. I was actually there when he wrote the song [“Remember”]… and it stayed with me for the rest of my life.”
Micky Dolenz’ Remember is an enjoyable and fun audio scrapbook of Dolenz' most cherished memories. It is sure to be a special treat for all audiences ~ Get ready to take a trip down memory lane!

OK, it's October 1st ... are the Christmas decorations up in your store yet??? Just kidding ... but it seems like Christmas comes earlier and earlier each year ... and it's really not unthinkable anymore to see Christmas decorations, Thanksgiving decorations and Halloween decorations all prominently on display this month, often side by side in the same aisles!  (Kinda wears you out before the big holiday 'though, thinking about it this early!)
This is certainly NOT the case, however, when it comes to radio programming ... stations looking to spice up their holiday line-up need to be making these arrangements NOW ... and we've found JUST the program to give YOUR station the edge ... check this out!!!

Get ready to count down …
THE 100 GREATEST CHRISTMAS HITS OF ALL TIME
Burbank, California, USA – Monday, October 1, 2012 --
“The 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time” - a star-studded 10-hour countdown of the biggest and best-selling original hit Yuletide singles (and albums) from Bing Crosby to the present - will be distributed in the U.S. and around the world this holiday season by L.A.-based Radio Express. Hosted by Wink Martindale, the Christmas countdown features not just the classic original hit recordings but season’s greetings and the stories-behind-their-holiday-hits from nearly 160 stars -- from The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Elvis Presley to Elton John, Madonna and Mariah Carey … The Eagles, Brenda Lee and Bruce Springsteen … Whitney Houston and literally everybody else who has ever scored a Yuletide hit.
“It’s a goodtime show, packed with music, magic and memories,” says Martindale, “plus a few surprises.” Writer-producer Gary Theroux, whose 52-hour “History of Rock ‘n’ Roll” won Billboard’s “Top Special Program of the Year” award, based the content on Billboard chart data as well as other sources, such as listings of the Christmas tracks most played on radio over the 20 years. Every Yuletide evergreen you can think of is included – from the goodtime gold and deeply romantic to the sentimental songs, beloved carols and fantasy favorites.
Radio Express CEO Tom Rounds first teamed with Wink for “The Elvis Presley Story,” which Martindale narrated for Watermark, the company which launched Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40.”
This 10-hour special is available with market exclusivity to stations either inside or outside the U.S.

Sounds like a GREAT holiday special ... and writer Gary Theroux tells us more ...

Hi, Kent.
Not mentioned in the press release is just how wide the array of artists included in the special is: nearly 160 in all, from the cast of "Glee" on back to -- Thomas A. Edison! They include a lot of the ones you’d certainly expect to show up, like:
Andy Williams, B.J. Thomas, Bing Crosby, Bobby Darin, Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vinton, Burl Ives, Chubby Checker, Connie Francis, Del Shannon, Dion, Eartha Kitt, Elton John, Elvis Presley, Gary Puckett, Gene Autry, Jim Croce, Jim Reeves, Johnny Mathis, Johnny Tillotson, Jose Feliciano, Judy Garland, Les Paul, Mark Lindsay, Paul Evans, Perry Como, Roy Orbison, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Madonna, The Impressions, Whitney Houston, The Chipmunks, The Crystals, Bruce Springsteen, The Carpenters, The Drifters, The Eagles, Mariah Carey, The Lettermen, The Ronettes, The Royal Guardsmen, U2, Band Aid, The Seekers, Nat "King" Cole, and a whole lot more "expected" people --- but then again, when you open the doors to a come-one, come-all goodtime ALL-TIME Yuletide bash, you never really know just who might show up to share a little Yuletide cheer. So don’t be surprised to find in the 70-plus year mix of music, magic and memories folks like the following:
Alan Sherman, Dennis Day, Spike Jones, The Three Stooges, Lorne Greene, Mel Blanc, Weird Al Yankovic, Jack Benny, Merv Griffin, The Smothers Brothers, Stan Freberg, Jimmy Stewart, Cliff "Jiminy Cricket" Edwards, Walter Brennan, Howdy Doody, Shrek, Shirley Temple, Jimmy Durante, Paul Harvey, The Crew of Apollo 8 (who spent Christmas in space in 1968), The Cast of "Mystery Science 3000", and a whole lot more.
The countdown – which includes every original Christmas hit recording you can think of (plus some real surprises) features the stories behind the songs, many told by the original hitmakers themselves.
Call your favorite radio station and let them know you’d like them to carry THE 100 GREATEST CHRISTMAS HITS OF ALL TIME. It’s available worldwide through Radio Express.
Gary Theroux

Though I must work several jobs, I have promised myself one concert a month to maintain my sanity. This weekend was the September concert (just got it in). I saw Dick Fox's Doo Wop Extravaganza in Westbury, Lon Giland. Our line-up included: Randy and the Rainbows, The Marcels, Shirley Alston Reeves, The Duprees, Jay Siegel's Tokens, Lenny Dell and the Demensions, Charlie Thomas and the Drifters, and Lightning Lou Christie.
I watched the show through the eyes of my students, pretending they could see what I saw. They would have reveled in the spins and turns of The Marcels, who whirled around like they were 15 years old. The Drifters smooth synchronization would have had them spell-bound, and WE-MA-WAY would have echoed back from the audience at Jay Siegel. There was not one disappointing moment from any act. I went to see Lou Christie and was invited to his reception afterward. He is an always gracious host and supreme performer. I had an excellent night. All in the theatre had an excellent night as the standing ovations were numerous. ("Thank you for the standing ovation", said Lou Christie. "I know how difficult it is for all of you now.") creeeeeking knee sound effects
Remembering Kent's notice about the original Crickets (who were at another Doo Wop Show recently), we all need to see these performers now, while we can. WOW! Hasn't anybody lost their voice? What is it with our 60's singers? They are still fantastic!
Shelley J. Sweet-Tufano

Yes, sadly we're learning that ALL of these shows are nothing more than "limited engagements" these days ... if there's somebody you've always been longing to see, do it now while you're still able. (I've never seen Lou Christie ... had tickets a couple of times but both times the shows were cancelled. Would love to finally be able to catch him in concert, but he doesn't pass through Chicago very often.) As for The Crickets, there big performance at The Arcada Theatre is this weekend. I'm hoping some of the "locals" on the list snapped up some tickets ... that's a show you may not get a chance to see again. And talk about variety ... after The Crickets play their '50's rock on Saturday Night, you can catch The Go-Go's on Sunday! New shows added for next year: Jim Peterik's World Stage (January 19th), Boz Scaggs (April 12th) and Frankie Avalon (May 4th). kk

101 Essential Rock Records: The Golden Age of Vinyl, from The Beatles to The Sex Pistols, is a lush, thoughtful overview of rock’s most seminal albums. This celebration of the vinyl record was compiled and edited by music industry veteran Jeff Gold, and features contributions from musicians Devendra Banhart, David Bowie, Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Nels Cline (Wilco), Robyn Hitchcock, Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Graham Nash, and Suzanne Vega. Set for publication December 6 from esteemed arts and culture publisher Gingko Press, the 260 page hardcover offers 300 illustrations in a 9 ½” x 11 ½” coffee table format and carries a suggested list price of $39.95 (available for preorder from Amazon; link below.)

Gold’s book shines a light on 101 rock albums, well known and obscure, that changed music forever; from the Beatles 1963 UK debut Please Please Me through the Sex Pistols 1977 classic Never Mind The Bollocks. The book focus is on vinyl’s “Golden Age”; a period beginning with the explosion of album sales brought on by Beatlemania, and ending in the late 70’s, with the advent of Sony’s Walkman—and the cassette overtaking the LP as the dominant music format.
Far from a round-up of obvious hits, this thoughtful book offers the big names –The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac—alongside lesser-known but highly influential artists including Them, Laura Nyro, The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Stooges.

A two-page spread on each album features large images of each record’s front and back cover and record label, alongside an essay by music journalist Gene Sculatti, discussing that particular album’s influence and impact. Each album depicted is the earliest issue from the artist’s country of origin—akin to a first edition book. These include the first-ever version of the Beatles debut, valued at $5,000, and an alternate issue of Bob Dylan’s Freewheelin’, worth $10,000.
Gold estimates that, based on current market values, the albums pictured in the book would cost a collector upwards of $125,000 to assemble.

A full list of the 101 Essential Rock Records is provided below.

Thought provoking essays from musicians and notable observers discussing vinyl in general, and the featured albums that influenced them bring added dimension to the book. Graham Nash’s writes about The Beatles’ Please Please Me and Joni Mitchell’s Blue. Nash, whose band The Hollies were contemporaries of ‘The Fab Four,’ describes meeting The Beatles at a 1959 talent show where they were billed as Johnny and the Moondogs and how, four years later, John Lennon and Paul McCartney sang him the just written Misery, “one voice in each ear.” He writes of meeting Joni Mitchell at a party in Ottawa in 1967 and calls Blue his “most favorite solo album,” confessing, “the thought that I spent much time with this fine woman and genius of a writer is incredible to me.”

David Bowie speaks eloquently about the Velvet Underground’s enormous influenced on him, noting that his band, Buzz, performed the band’s “I’m Waiting For The Man” as an encore at their last gig, and that “it was the first time a Velvet song had been covered by anyone, anywhere in the world. Lucky me.”

Iggy Pop writes of the life-changing impact of hearing Van Morrison’s no-holds-barred performance on the first album by Them, as well as his admiration for Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention’s Freak Out, and how opening for the Mothers “pushed me to be weirder faster, and also to be stranger to look at…That night I did my first stage dive. I knew the Mothers were on after us and I didn’t want people to forget about us.”
Also included are contributions from Susanne Vega, Peter Buck of REM, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Nels Cline of Wilco, Devendra Banhart, Robyn Hitchcock, Elektra Records founder Jac Holzman, cultural critic Jon Savage, art director Mick Haggerty and record producer Joe Boyd. A four page spread titled Jimi Hendrix: Record Collector pictures and details the personal record collection of rock’s most revered guitarist. In addition to the expected jazz, blues, soul and rock albums, Hendrix’s collection included oddities such as Friar Tuck and His Psychedelic Guitar.

A full list of contributors and their topics is provided below.

The book also includes a four page pictorial exploration of censored album covers, including the notorious Beatles “Butcher Cover”, the original cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland (picturing 19 nude girls,) and a lesser known and extremely rare version of David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, before the dog’s genitals were airbrushed out.

While 101 Essential Rock Records is a look back to a time when the vinyl LP was the dominant format, it should be noted that we are currently in the midst of a vinyl revival. In 2010 vinyl was the fastest growing format, and in 2011 US vinyl sales topped 3.6 million units; a 37% increase from the previous year.

We first mentioned the big James Bond 50th Anniversary Celebration in conjunction with an email from Vic Flick, the British session guitarist who played the legendary guitar riff on the John Barry version of "The James Bond Theme" way back when. Here's another letter from Vic, sharing a very special Jimmy Page memory ...

re: GUITARMEN:
Hi Kent,
Thanks for the heads up about the forthcoming book by Jimmy Page. I shall order my copy. And thank you for mentioning my book, 'Vic Flick - Guitarman.'
I was fortunate enough to share an epic moment with Jimmy Page. Jimmy and I were working and sitting next to each other in Decca 2 Studios, London, when the contractor, Charlie Katz walked up to us.
Charlie stared down at Jimmy for a moment and said, "I hear you're joining some group and not working sessions any more?"
Jimmy, looking a little crestfallen at being challenged replied, "Yes, that's true."
Charlie stared at him for a moment longer before saying the momentous words, "Silly boy, silly boy. You should think of your future."
I often laugh to myself when I think of that moment.
Best wishes,
Vic Flick
As one of the top, most in-demand session guitarists on the London Pop Music Scene at the time, Jimmy certainly didn't need to go through the rigors of a regular band to earn a living ... in fact, from what I've heard, "road trips" for some of these top-notch musicians amounted to a serious cut in pay from what they could have been making doing studio work. (I'm sure you experienced the same thing!) But who knew Led Zeppelin would turn into what it turned into, making Jimmy Page a household name (and even bigger legend than he already was.) You just never know. (As he was warned at the time, his band could have gone over like a lead balloon ... but THAT bit of advice simply inspired their name!!!) kk

>>>Interesting that your Friday's edition mentioned both Moon River and James Bond. Did you realize that the opening three notes of Moon River and and the opening three notes of Goldinger are the same? I believe Moon River is sung over a major chord and Goldfinger is sung over a minor chord. Strange isn't it. (Dave / Hoffman Estates)
Yes, same first three notes, sol-re-do. To be more precise about the differences, the former goes from the tonic chord to the vi (relative minor) whereas the latter goes from the tonic to bVI. IOW, putting them both in C: C-Am compared to C-Ab.
Also, Moon River is in 3/4, Goldfinger in 4/4.
Two other songs with the same first three notes: Misty and Ebb Tide.

re: R.B. GREAVES:
Did you hear that R. B. Greaves died? Fact or fiction?
Lou Simon/ Sirius XM
It took quite a bit of digging to pin this one down.  (We first received this inquiry on Monday, October 1st ... and the story didn't hit The New York Times until Thursday, the 4th ... but in the meantime, Ron Smith (at www.oldiesmusic.com) was able to pin it down thanks to confirmation from a couple of R.B.'s relatives.  (We had done a pretty thorough and extensive search and couldn't find anything posted about this ... other than a Wikipedia Page devoted to Greaves stating that he passed away on September 27th. As we've stated SO many times before, Wikipedia is rarely a reliable or definitive source ... so I kept digging.  It just seemed to me that if this were true, there would have been several other announcements posted ... but I couldn't find any ... so my first inclination was to pass it off as just be a nasty rumor.
But then we passed the baton to Rock And Roll Oldies Sleuth Ron Smith who told us that apparently it WAS true ... Greaves passed away on the 27th exactly as stated ... so first hearing this on October 1st and finding no back-up confirmation, this certainly seems to have been "hushed-up" pretty well for the past few days! (I'm not quite sure I get that ... it's not like he's stayed on the radar music-wise these past 40 years!)

Here, from www.oldiesmusic.com, is Ron Smith's official obituary:

R.B Greaves -- best known for the 1969 hit, "Take A Letter, Maria" -- died Thursday (September 27) in Los Angeles at the age of 67. No cause of death was given.
Born Ronald Bertram Greaves III in Georgetown, British Guyana, R.B. (a nephew of the great Sam Cooke), Greaves grew up on a Seminole Indian reservation before moving to England in 1963. Using the name Sonny Childe and the TNTs he first established himself as a recording artist in the UK and the
Caribbean on the Decca and Polydor labels. Returning to the States and signing with Atco Records, he cut "Take A Letter, Maria" with label president Ahmet Ertegun himself producing. The song reach #2 in the US, but did not chart at all in Britain. It was followed by his version of "Always Something There To Remind Me" (#27 - 70) but four other tunes failed to crack the top 80 -- including covers of "Fire And Rain" (#82 - 1970) and "Whiter Shade Of Pale" (#82 - 1970). Moving to Los Angeles, he went to work for a technology company while staying on the periphery of the music business.
-- Ron Smith

The New York Times finally ran the story three days after we confirmed it through Ron Smith:

Take a letter, Maria ... R.B. Greaves has left us.  (By the way, I let Lou Simon of the XM / Sirius 60s Channel that he was now safe to proceed with his ten-hour "Take A Letter Maria" marathon for the station.)  kk

And we lost another very talented human being last week ... this from Elvis Expert Cory Cooper:

One of Motown's bright lights behind the scenes in the 1960's, writer and producer Frank Wilson, passed away on Thursday from prostate cancer. He was 71.
As a writer and producer, Wilson worked with most of the Motown elite before branching off to other labels during the 70's. His writing credits include You Made Me So Very Happy (Brenda Holloway and Blood Sweat and Tears), Love Child, Up the Ladder to the Roof, Keep On Truckin', Still Water (Love) and Boogie Down.
When Motown expanded to Los Angeles in 1965, Wilson became one of the first people to come on board. The west coast's first single, Stevie by Patrice Holloway, was a Wilson composition and he went on to work on Stevie Wonder's Castles in the Sand and the Ikettes I'm So Thankful.
Wilson also tried his hand as a singer, releasing one single on the Soul label of his song Do I Love You (Indeed I Do). It didn't go on to become a hit but made a lasting impression in the U.K. where it has become a classic of Northern Soul. At this point, only two copies are known to still exist.
Over the next ten years, Wilson wrote and/or produced music for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, the Supremes, the Four Tops, the Temptations, the Isley Brothers and many others.
Wilson left Motown in 1976 and worked with the likes of Freda Payne, Lenny Williams and Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. before becoming a born again Christian and entering the ministry. He also became an author including the books The Master Degree-Majoring in Your Marriage and Unmasking the Lone Ranger. In 2006, he returned to producing, working with John Legend on Each Day Gets Better.

EXCLUSIVE: Forgotten Hits Interviews Felix Cavaliere About The Up-Coming Rascals Reunion

I had the pleasure and opportunity to talk to Felix Cavaliere on Sunday about the upcoming Rascals Reunion Shows ... and wanted to share that conversation (and more of this exciting news) with our readers.

kk / FORGOTTEN HITS: Hi Felix! Great to talk to you again ... it's been a few years ... but this is a very exciting time ... I mean, EVERYBODY's excited about this thing ... we've gotten nothing but positive response since we first announced the reunion about a week ago ... it's the biggest news story of the week and it's great to be able to talk to you about it because it's some very exciting news for the fans and, I'm sure, for you guys, too.   There's been talk so many time before in the past about a full-blown Rascals reunion, but other than that one-off charity concert a couple of years ago, it just hasn't come to pass. What made things different this year that is finally allowing this all to come together? How long has this been in the works? How long have you guys been talking about doing this? Obviously something like this doesn't just come together over night. What makes the timing right now for this highly-anticipated reunion to take place?

FELIX CAVALIERE: Well, the only thing I can tell you is the fellow who's responsible for all of this, in TOTAL, is Stevie Van Zandt. You know, we did a benefit two years ago in New York City for the Kristen Carr Cancer Foundation that Steve was part of and Bruce, too, of course ... and he has been trying literally since that date, which is 2010, to have something happen. And frankly, I'm a little bit disappointed that he was unable to get it to happen until now.

kk: lol

FC: And he's just nurtured these guys,  Seriously,  I mean he's taken care of these guys, the other guys in the band ... made sure they get healthy, make sure they get in shape, make sure that they can sing ... I mean I've never seen anything like it. And he took it upon himself ... and another fellow by the name of Marc Brickman, who is a lighting director, to put together a multi-media stage show. It's not a concert ... it's more of a multi-media type event ... and the only thing I can say is that when he approached me with the idea, initially I thought it was a great idea. But it's entirely his baby ... he's done everything, you know. And the last time we met about this project was in September when he said, "I think it's gonna happen."

kk: Had you been keeping in touch with the other guys during that time, since the 2010 concert?

FC: I wish I could say yes to that, but no ... I have not. The only one I've been in touch with is Gene Cornish.  Gene had me up in Rochester, New York, back in April ... he asked me to induct him into The Rochester New York Hall Of Fame ... and I did. It was very gracious of him to ask me, you know, so I did ... I was the inductor. But that's about it, I'm sorry to say ... there's been no repartee ... no conversation ... it's respect for Steve and the idea and the plan that he's got ... this is the reason that this is happening.

kk: And you have to understand from the fans' perspective, we all live in a dream world where everybody gets along and everything's just like it was forty years ago ... and of course the more I do this, I realize that's never the case.

FC: Well first of all, you have to consider the amount of time ... that's a long time ... that's a long time ago ... I mean, we were kids, you know ... and, of course, I don't even live in the state anymore, so it's a little more difficult now. Not that it's impossible to be in touch but, you know, you go on with your lives. I'm still working out there in the field ... I'm still doing shows ... as a matter of fact, I'm doing solo shows now ... I'm getting ready to do a brand new album ... as myself ... not as part of The Rascals ... so everybody goes on with their lives. And then you're bound together by your musical past, you know, which is really interesting.

kk: Right ... now the three shows in New York are obviously the only things that have officially been announced but let's face it, you don't go through all this time and trouble and money and just do three shows. I mean there's gotta be more to the story, right?

FC: Well, you know, for example, when The Four Seasons did their "Jersey Boys" ... they tested the water quite a bit before they finally realized that they had something ... it was their fifth script that actually made that play happen. So I've got a feeling that this is more like a test run ... see what happens, see how it's received, see how it's staged ... you know, it may not be the last incarnation of it ... of this thing. He's got a GREAT idea ... now let's see how it flies. It's really experimental at this point. Let's see ... if it's great, then of course we're going to do it again. If it's not, then we go back to the drawing board and redraw it.

The shows are being marketed as a "multi-media event, featuring a live performance by the band, augmented with narration, pre-filmed scenes and old footage of the band.
To date, three shows are officially booked ... December 13, 14 and 15, at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York ... and these shows sold old immediately. (I've already heard from several fans who were lucky enough to secure tickets to some of these shows.) There's also been talk of more shows being added, along with a brand new reunion album ... but Felix tells us that a lot of this is purely speculation and media hype at this point.
The one thing that we DO know for sure is that Steven Van Zandt (Little Steven of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band) is acting as their manager and has been coordinating and orchestraing this whole event with the help of lighting whiz kid Marc Brickman, who will help produce and direct the performances.
There's been a little bit of negativity surrounding the use of Kickstarter as a means to help raise funds for these shows, but Little Steven describes the show this way:

"The show will be an uplifting inspiration for you fans that have been waiting all these years, praying for a Rascals comeback, and those of you who are younger will get a real taste of the Sixties you missed the first time around. Me and Marc have invested our time, money and blood these last few years for this idea and now we need you to bring it home. Not one dollar that is contributed will go into anyone's pocket or be commissioned in any way. Every dollar will go into the production, making it as good as it can be, as great as the Rascals deserve ... so that's it. The Rascals are coming back ... the production will be as big as you make it."

kk: Have you seen some of the multi-media effects and that?

FC: No, I have seen nothing except for a script. So I've seen the back part of it ... and of course I know the music for it, but I don't know what else is there.

kk: So have you been in rehearsals at this point or no?

FC: Not yet ... not yet. That'll probably start up around the end of October.

kk: Well, it's not like you don't know the material, right?!?! (lol)

FC: (lol) No, it's not like we don't know the material. Certainly I've been still doing it all these years.

kk: Did it all kinda fall back into place? Even though you guys hadn't really been in touch with each other for quite a while ... and let's face it, you had a couple of competing versions of The Rascals going around out there ... when you got together and did the show in 2010, was it almost like a natural step?

FC: Umm ... yeah, fairly so ... I mean it was fun, it was interesting, you know ... but yeah, it is kinda natural because when you do get back together, things just sort of fall into place ... but we had some help, also, you know.

kk: And what's all this talk about a new album? Is this something that's also in the works at this point in time?

FC: That hasn't been discussed yet with me ... it seems like it's all been discussed through the press but as of right now, I have not heard about that, so we'll see.

kk: If this all worked out it would seem to almost be a natural progression ... The Beach Boys turned their reunion into a very successful tour and a big hit album so it'd be neat if this reunion ended up putting you all back in the studio together again, too.

FC: Well, all I can tell you about that is that we're still trying to get these first few shows off the ground. If they go well, sure, we'd like to tour and give other people the chance to see it ... and if that goes over well, who knows, maybe there would be an album somewhere down the road. But for right now this seems to be something concocted by the press as more of a speculation thing ... there's been no discussion yet about recording an album ... at least not with me yet anyway.

kk: Well, I've got to tell you that the whole world is waiting for this to happen ... I don't know if you realize sometimes how much this music has meant to all of us who grew up with it. I was too young to see The Rascals back at that time so the chance to see a concert with all four original guys playing the hits and watching the media show as a back-drop is pretty exciting.

FC: Oh, that's cool, man, I really appreciate that ... that's really nice to hear.

kk: We've been getting a real good response, ever since we put the word out last week, everything's just been real, real positive ... I've talked to a few people who already have their tickets for the New York shows ... and the rest of us Rascals fans certainly hope that the shows don't end there.

FC: Well, that's good ... so good to hear ... and hopefully it will all come off to be a great one ... because I feel that that is something that we all want ... we want to do something special ... something that'll be memorable.

kk: All I can tell you is that this music meant a lot to an awful lot of people.

FC: Well, thank you man ... and that's what I've been finding out over all these years ... and still, after all this time, one of the things I enjoy the most is being part of this music industry and having created something that you can be proud of ... because back in those days ... the Forgotten Hits era ... it was magic, you know.

kk: This music is timeless ... it's been proven to be timeless ... and new people are discovering it every day.

FC: Which is great ... which is great. How are things going for you with Forgotten Hits by the way?

kk: It's going along ... it's going on fourteen years now ...

FC: Wow! Wow! Really?!?!?

kk: Well, more and more artists are participating now and that's what makes this whole thing work ... to be able to talk to a Felix Cavaliere who was there at the time ... you guys can tell stories that no one else knows because you were there when it was happening, MAKING it happen ... you can correct some "mistruths" that have been circulating for year and years and years ...

FC: Right, right ...

kk: And that's what makes it exciting for me ... because first and foremost I'm still a fan ... I love this music and it's always been such a huge part of my life. And I just love being able to talk to these artists and get to the bottom of some of this stuff and then share it with the other music fans out there through the website.

FC: Absolutely! Sure, sure. And I'm glad to do private interviews like this for a publication like yours.

kk: Well, I appreciate that.

FC: It's really all being directed by Steven right now ... and then there's Bruce's thing ... Bruce Springsteen is bigger than ever, all over the world, it's unbelievable ... unbelievable!

kk: Well thanks again so much for taking the time to do this ... and if there's anything else you'd like to say to the fans, please feel free to use our forum to do so ... this is big, big news.

FC: Well, first of all I'd like to say thank you for hangin' in there with us for all these years ... and we're really looking forward to seeing everybody ... we're hoping it's going to be a fantastic show for everyone. I mean, Steve's words to me were "When you see this thing, man, you're going to wish you were in the audience watching it!" (lol) And I think that's a great quote.

kk: Sounds like it's going to be quite the show ... can't wait to see it!

FC: All right, bud ... take care!

The Rascals Reunion

re: THE RASCALS:
I can't even begin to describe the excitement we're feeling about the big Rascals Reunion coming up later this year.  And it looks like many of our readers are excited, too ...
Read on!!!

Hey Kent,
Am I ever PUMPED that the original lineup of The Rascals is getting back together! I sure hope they make it to this part of the country. It is so sad that there have been two configurations of the group, for so long, "Felix Cavaliere's Rascals" and "The New Rascals", featuring Dino and Gene. Both bands are good and entertaining, but everyone wants the boys back together. My all-time favorite rock drummer is Dino Danelli. I was determined to meet him, when the New Rascals played here. On their last song, I got next to the stage. When they were done, I said, "Hey Dino, you're my hero!" (Couldn't think of any thing else to say!) Then he came up to me, shook my hand, and said, "Thanks, man!" The group's lead singer and keyboardist, Bill Pascal, is a great performer, and a heck of a nice guy, as we talked and sent e-mails, but, once again, it didn't sound the same (as in Journey without Steve Perry, or Styx without Dennis DeYoung, etc., etc.). Let's hope the boys can set aside their differences, (unlike the Beach Boys) and make this reunion last.
-- John LaPuzza
Yikes!!! There's actually a Rascal named Bill Pascal?!?!?!
Bill Pascal, The Rascal?!?!
Are you kidding me?!?!?
Hell, that's reason enough right there for the original band to get back together!!!
Seriously, we, too, cannot wait to see them ... we never had the pleasure the first time around.  (And clearly we're not the only ones ... check out some of the other Rascals Reunion comments we received last week!)

Check out this Rascals' Hit List:
"I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" (#52, 1966); "Good Lovin'" (#1, 1966); "You Better Run" (#20, 1966); "Come On Up" (#43, 1966); "I've Been Lonely Too Long" (#15, 1967); "Groovin'" (#1, 1967); "A Girl Like You" (#5, 1967 ... and my personal favorite); "How Can I Be Sure" (#2, 1967); "It's Wonderful" (#12, 1968); "A Beautiful Morning" (#2, 1968); "People Got To Be Free" (#1, 1968); "A Ray Of Hope" (#12, 1969); "Heaven" (#14, 1969); "See" (#11, 1969); "Carry Me Back" (#10, 1969); "Hold On" (#27, 1970); "Glory Glory" (#38, 1970) and "Love Me" (#74, 1971).

It just doesn't get any better than this! (And by the way, let me just say that it is SO cool to be able to incorporate the Record World peaks into our chart recaps now, thanks to Joel Whitburn's new "Hit Records" book, recapping the Music Vendor and Record World Pop Singles Charts, 1954 - 1982!!!) kk

And, despite what you may have heard ... and despite the fact that the band has, in effect, now come full circle ... we need to state for the record that no, they are NOT coming back as "The Old Rascals" ... but that WOULD have been be kinda cool! (lol) kk

A FULL BLOWN RASCALS REUNION WOULD BE A GAS! THEY TRIED THIS FIFTEEN OR TWENTY YEARS AGO, BUT WITHOUT EDDIE ... I SAW THAT TOUR AND TOOK SOME PIX, BUT NO ONE CAN SING "HOW CAN I BE SURE" LIKE EDDIE!! I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHY THESE GROUPS CAN'T GET OVER THE HUMP WHILE THEY'RE STILL ALIVE!! LOOK AT THE MONKEES NOW FOR A PRIME CASE OF JUDGMENT. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS WILL NOT BE A FULL BLOWN TOUR, BUT I HOPE THAT CHANGES. I ALSO HOPE TO SEE IT FOR MYSELF IF MY LIFE SCHEDULE ALLOWS FOR IT! A NEW ALBUM WOULD BE COOL, TOO! THERE'S NOT TOO MANY 60'S BANDS LEFT WITH ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS STILL ALIVE (LET ALONE STILL ON TOP OF THEIR GAME), SO HAPPENSTANCES LIKE THIS ARE ALWAYS A GODSEND ... OUR NEW YORK BUDDY COUSIN BRUCIE MORROW HAS GOT TO BE OVER THE MOON RIGHT NOW, AND I KNOW TOMMY JAMES WILL BE EXCITED AS WELL. AND LET US NOT FORGET WHO'S MAINLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS: GOD BLESS LITTLE STEVEN!!!!

Kent ...
This brings back great vibes. "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" is a top five pick on my all time underrated rock song list. I hope they rip the cover off the ball. The Rascals never got the props they deserve.
Chet Coppock

I actually saw The Rascals (without Eddie) I want to say back around 1988. On the bill were the Shadows Of Knight, Joey Dee, Ronnie Spector and maybe Steppenwolf. (The more I think about it, I could be melding two different shows. Maybe someone in FH saw it as well.)  I forget who filled in for Eddie, as there were four band members. I gotta say if the Rascals come to the St. Louis area, or perhaps Effingham, there's a place there that's booking these kind of acts, Peter Noone will be playing there in January. Anyways with my luck, they'll play some place local the weekend I'm in Chicago. Local for me is around a two hour drive. Maybe my ex-gf will win tix and she'll invite me up to them. I will keep my eyes open for news. I'd love to go. I can't think of a song of there's I really don't like.
Jack

The four original Rascals is what I'm talking about. That'll be a show worth seeing and paying for an above average ticket to attend. BUT it must be all four originals in order to blow my dress up. Over 20 years ago when I lived in Tucson, Felix came through town with, I believe, just Gene, and not the other two fellas. I wasn't interested because Dino wasn't coming. Felix's cousin Vinnie was telling me he had gotten together with Felix and then went on to see the show. He recounted that the show was still very good.
My experience was getting to open for them 45 years ago when they were in their prime. They came to Tucson along with Eric Burdon and the Animals, and my group (Yellow Balloon) along with "The Spiders" (Alice Cooper), who opened the show.
We had all The Rascals songs down to memory and were glad as hell to be in the hall with them. If Dino is still half as good as he was back then, the show will still kick ass. Dino was a machine that you couldn't take your eyes off, 100% show. We were in a low-ceiling warehouse and with the stage and then the drum risers his head was two feet from the light fixtures. When his solo came he started playing a solo on the neon fixtures and anything in sight. I'll bet when he was a kid he'd take his sticks to church and beat shit out of the furniture.
The Rascals just stomped a mudhole in our town and were talked about for a long time afterwards. That is one of the groups that impressed me in all my travels. SO, if it's those same four dudes ... Felix, Eddie, Dino and Gene ... it is going to be on. Too bad they aren't coming out west ... I'd sure like to see that event again.
Alex Valdez
It's those four dudes ... and kick-ass is EXACTLY what it's going to be. The full tour itinerary hasn't been announced yet ... so don't be surprised if some west coast dates still pop up on the agenda. Thanks, Alex! (kk)

By my calculations, we’ve waited longer for all four original Rascals to tour than we waited for Hell to Freeze over and the Eagles to get back together.
Thanks to the deep rooted passion of Little Steven, you know that this reunion is going to be special. The set list will be extensive and well rehearsed and for any fan attending the shows, there’ll be plenty of audio / visual extras / montages produced, so that anyone who is lucky enough to witness one of these shows, and isn’t fully aware of the Rascals story, will be fully informed by the time they leave the theatre.
I have my tickets for closing night (third concert) of the first stop on the tour, at the newly renovated Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. If the three dates there go well, the Rascals will be spreading some “Good Lovin’” around the USA!

It DOES seem long overdue, doesn't it? Here's hoping they make their way to Chicago ... where The Rascals were VERY popular back in the day ... ten Top 20 Hits including the aforementioned "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore", which never made The National Top 40. (kk)

Here's a fairly recent shot of Felix in concert during his most recent performance at New York's Westbury Music Fair. Exclusive Forgotten Hits photo by Tom Cuddy.

It seems only fitting that a figure like Steven Van Zandt could and would bring back such a pivotal and seminal group like The Rascals; I can't wait for it-it'll be epic for sure!

Little Steven van Zandt announced on Sirius XM that he has finally secured a commitment from all four members of The Rascals to reunite for a series of shows to be held at the newly restored Capitol Theater in Port Chester, New York, on December 13-14-15. Tickets went on sale on Friday morning, September 28th, for all three dates. The group did do a few songs at a benefit show a few years ago but have not done a formal concert in decades. The show promises to be a combination of a concert and a theatrical event with visuals as well as some theatric representation of the group’s story. And whatever is on the set list, is guaranteed to not disappoint. As you know, it’s a treasure trove of rockin’ soul music and no one did it better than the Rascals, both young and otherwise!
Lou Simon / Sirius XM

I loved their records right from the start and watched their 1966 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show with great interest. Their band configuration was so unusual insofar as they had no bass player yet somehow managed to get a full sound. The bass notes were covered by Felix Cavaliere on his Hammond B-3 organ using the pedals, a bit like Ray Manzarek did for The Doors using a separate bass keyboard atop his Vox electric piano.
Dino Desi & Billy had performed in Honolulu at both The Shell (like a mini Hollywood Bowl) and the HIC (Hawaii International Center) as the opening act for The Beach Boys in 1965 and 1967, respectively. I was in Oahu (Honolulu) for my 18th birthday when The Rascals were scheduled to play the HIC on July 5, 1969. I probably contacted my friend, Tom Moffatt (former K-POI disc jockey, promoter), to make arrangements for me to see their show. I had a great seat right in front of Gene Cornish's position on stage left. The group did not disappoint and did a wonderful show, full of energy and enthusiasm.
I don't recall exactly how it came about, but I ended up spending the next day with Eddie Brigati at a private house he had rented during their run at the HIC - the group was way too popular to be staying at any of the local hotels. I remember him showing me his collection of shells that he kept in a large steamer trunk that he was going to send back home. We and some of his friends went swimming in a nearby area, diving off a rock jetty and just having a good time. That's the last time I saw Eddie. However, I have had occasion to see Felix perform over the years as a solo act when our paths have crossed at various venues around the country while I have toured with Al Jardine of The Beach Boys. Felix is always so friendly and gracious whenever we meet and I never tire of hearing him perform. I spent a few days at the Rock Con Event in New Jersey in the summer of 2010, sitting near Gene's table where we both signed autographs for fans. On the other hand, I have never met Dino Danelli though I think he is a great drummer with a unique style and a familiar first name !
Their songs and recordings remain some of my favorites in the rock 'n' roll canon and Dino, Desi & Billy even recorded "Good Lovin''' on one of our albums - I insisted on it! I wish them great success with their reunion and hope they come to Vegas so I can tell them so in person."

EXCLUSIVE: Forgotten Hits Interviews Scott Shannon

All the immediate media attention surrounding the big shake-up at WLS-FM has focused on the local legends who are left or have come back to the station ... but little if any attention has been paid to Scott Shannon, the guy who put WLS-FM back on the radio map a few years ago when he launched The True Oldies Channel after Jack-FM came into town and bumped our oldies station WMJK off the air in favor of their short-lived format.

Honestly, it just doesn't make sense ... don't get me wrong ... the talent left at the station is top-notch to be sure ... and each of these guys is a local broadcasting legend ... but missing from the formula now is Scott Shannon, one of the most recognized and honored deejays on the planet.

Shannon has won multiple Billboard Broadcaster of the Year Awards, and, in addition to hosting mid-days here in Chicago on WLS-FM, was still doing his New York morning show at WPLJ, as well as broadcasting 24/7 on his True Oldies Channel, carried live by over a hundred radio outlets across the country, as well as streaming worldwide over the web.

Shannon's ratings were consistently the station's highest, often outscoring the station as a whole, meaning despite the fact that he was voice-tracking from New York (the most consistently negative thing said about him here in the media), he was still the highest-rated jock on the air!

I had the chance to talk with Scott over the weekend and asked him if he wanted to say anything to his Chicagoland fans. (Far too often, in the world of radio, our favorite personalities are taken away from us without the chance to say goodbye ... when you're gone, you're gone, instantly old news in favor of the new team in place ... and while I've spent the better part of my life listening to great jocks like Brant Miller, Dick Biondi, Fred Winston and Greg Brown, I also had a deep affection for all that Scott Shannon brought to the party ... in my book, he single-handedly saved the oldies for Chicago ... and I've never met ANYBODY that loves the oldies more than he does.)

And ultimately they may have been what led to his downfall.  Program Director Jan Jeffries told radio media columnist Robert Feder on Monday that he is moving the station away from the oldies format, stating that the word won't even be used on the air anymore.

“It is clearly a shift of format from oldies to classic hits. There will not be any radio station like this one.” He then pointed to a playlist spanning ’60s to ’80s rock featuring Bryan Adams, Journey, John Mellencamp, Chicago, Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Supertramp, Styx, Blue Oyster Cult, Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen.  “We still will play a lot of the music that we’ve always played, but it’s no longer oldies. We will not use that word.”

"Above all, the presentation will be unique", Jeffries said. “We will be fresh to the market and will have instant relevance that is unduplicated. And that will be compounded by the fact that we have the most legendary [talent] lineup in Chicago — no question about it. Probably in the whole country.”

What's particularly out-of-sync in Jeffries' comments is the fact that you will find this exact same format, playing these exact same artists, up and down the radio dial here in Chicago, ad nauseum.  What's the point in bringing back these legendary Chicagoland broadcasters and then not letting them talk on the air, other than to give out the station's call letters?!?!  And worse, this isn't even THEIR music ... this isn't the music these guys are associated with!  Asking industry icons like Dick Biondi and Fred Winston and John "Records" Landecker to play the music of the late '70's and '80's is ludicrous, and then limiting these legends to simply presenting the station i.d.'s and nothing more is the biggest waste of on-air talent that I've ever seen ... and in no way reflects the legacy that WLS has built and earned over the years as Chicago's landmark radio station, often with these guys at the helm.

And it gets worse.  Chicago Radio and Media reports this morning that:

WLS-FM has done more than just change up its DJ lineup and branding today. Overnight, they also dramatically changed up their music selection playlist.

Despite being rated in the Top 5 as Chicago's only real Oldies station, Cumulus Program Director Jan Jeffries has decided to shift the music played to a playlist similar to that played on at least three other radio stations in town, WDRV-FM / WWDV-FM, WLUP-FM, and WJMK-FM, not to mention WERV-FM in the suburbs.

Gone from the station are most of the songs considered to be "Oldies." Also gone are non-Rock tracks. No more 60s & 70s R&B / Soul. No more Motown. No more Disco. No more Pop one-hit wonders. Almost no female artists. In its place are mostly male-sung Classic Rock tracks from the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Unlike the Classic Rock music selection on The Drive or The Loop, WLS-FM's selection tends to be softer, with no harder rock, no deep tracks, and no lesser-known artists. In fact, the station is staying with a limited selection of artists at this point.

Since the new musical direction started in earnest around 2:00 am, until just after 8:00 am, Elton John had already been played five times. Other repeat artists included Foreigner, Chicago, Tom Petty, Steve Miller, Billy Joel, and The Doobie Brothers. Dire Straits had their 1979 hit "Sultans of Swing" played twice within a few hours.

Even prior to today's change in musical direction, WLS-FM's personalities were barely allowed to talk on the air. Many fans were hoping that with the addition of Brant Miller and Fred Winston to the full-time DJ line-up, that the classic personalities would be allowed to showcase their ... personalities. So far, with new morning show host Brant Miller, it would appear that the DJs are still restricted to only speaking for a few seconds a few times an hour -- usually before and after breaks.

As mentioned here on Friday, the station has begin to call itself "Chicago's Classic Hits," instead of its previous branding of "Chicago's Greatest Hits." Makes one wonder if the old WLS-AM / WLS-FM slogan of "The Rock of Chicago"
wouldn't have been more appropriate.

GREAT!!! ... even MORE repeats!!! I love the "nothing else like it on the dial" logic ... where has this guy Jeffries been living for the past 20 years ... clearly somewhere where there is no radio ... because this is ALL we hear up and down the dial, non-stop, 24/7. What a COMPLETE waste of on-air talent not to let these guys do what they all do best ... COMMUNICATE with their audience.  (kk)

***

Meanwhile, as the other media outlets focus on what's wrong with what's left ... we're speaking today EXCLUSIVELY with what's missing ... this is our one-on-one conversation with Scott Shannon ... a true, broadcasting legend.

SCOTT SHANNON: Well, Kent, it looks like Forgotten Hits is back in the saddle again ... bigger and stronger than ever ... so I wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about this. I wanted to make a statement first ... as this is kind of a sad ending to my stint on Chicago radio ... but let me tell you that the complete evolution of WLS is happening. I wanted to say for the record that I grew up in the Midwest and for as far back as I can remember, I ALWAYS listened to WLS ... you couldn't grow up in the Midwest and not be exposed to The Big 89 ... WLS ... and when I decided that I wanted to be in radio ... I was still a kid in high school at the time ... but my dream was to be on the air at WLS. Obviously back then it was the AM ... The Big 89 ... and it took me a long time ... but eventually my dream came true. I was on WLS but it was 94.7 FM and I had the distinct pleasure and privilege ... and the incredible experience of being on the air there for a little over five years ... and I'm proud to say that I even have my own WLS jingle! And all I can tell you is that it was a wonderful experience for me.

kk / FORGOTTEN HITS: Now did this announcement come out of the blue? Were you pretty much blind-sided by this move or had you seen this coming or what?

SS: No, I really didn't see it coming because most of the time I had the highest ratings on the station.

kk: Yeah, that's the part that just doesn't make sense to me ... how do you get rid of the highest-rated guy and ... and I'm not patronizing here ... but a broadcasting legend who has won every broadcasting and radio award under the sun ... Broadcaster of the Year and on and on and on ... I mean, how do you do that to make this change? It's actually funny in a way ... when you said that you grew up listening to WLS ... and, as you know, I did, too ... well, all those guys are back again now! (lol) Everybody you listened to back in the day is back on the station again!

SS: Yeah, yeah ... but I don't have any bitter feelings. You have to understand that I may not be on WLS anymore but I still work for the company ... for Cumulus Broadcasting ... and I still have my morning show at WPLJ ... and I still have The True Oldies Channel that is broadcasting on over a hundred stations around the country as part of The True Oldies Network ... so I'm still part of the Cumulus Team ... I'm just not on the air in Chicago anymore.

kk: And that's one of the questions that people want to know ... is there another Cumulus Station in Chicago that potentially could become home to The True Oldies Channel?

SS: For the time being, there is no other station. If anybody wants to hear it, they can always listen online because we stream all over the globe ... but there really isn't a station available in Chicago at this time.

kk: That's too bad because it would be nice to listen over the radio, too, as well as over the Internet. Now are they going to continue to run True Oldies during the off-hours or on the weekends?

SS: No, I don't think that'll be part of it at all. I think now after Dick Biondi signs off they'll just automate the station. I used to do the show on Saturday Mornings from 6 till 10 but I think that's over now, too. You have to understand that at one time or another, I've covered every shift at the station except for mornings ... I used to program the station ... but True Oldies is still available to listen to on our website at TrueOldiesChannel.com ... and we're on i-Heart Radio ... so the people that want to listen to us can certainly find us. It's sad to say that I'm no longer connected with WLS but I still work for the same company and I wish them the very best. I think WLS will go on and will continue to be successful. A great radio station is not about one person.

kk: No, it's not ... and let's face it, they've got some great talent over there ... there are some really talented people onboard at the station with years of broadcasting history and experience, all of whom have had a long-standing presence here in Chicago.

SS: Certainly Brant Miller knows what he's doing, Fred Winston knows what he's doing ... and I have the utmost respect for the entire line-up over there. Greg Brown is a great guy who works his tail off and I couldn't be more pleased for Greg.

kk: Meanwhile, Dick Biondi kinda got the short end of the stick again, still stuck doing overnights, which I know has upset a lot of people here.

SS: Yeah, you know, Biondi is a radio legend ... and I think he's thrilled to still be on the air. Let's face it ... there's not many guys who have been able to be on the radio as long as Dick has ... you just don't see that.

kk: Fifty-something years!

SS: I would be more than thrilled to have had the career that Dick has had. He has had a remarkable career.

kk: But it sounds like you're doing okay, right? Unlike most jocks in this situation, you've still got The True Oldies Channel going ... the show on 'PLJ ... maybe a little bit of disappointment right now, but the fact is, Scott Shannon will still be on the radio tomorrow.

SS: Oh yeah, I'm disappointed ... but I had a little over five good years of being on WLS ... of being an on-air personality on a legendary set of call letters ... and it was part of my dream when I was a kid, so I really can't complain much. I really wish them well ... and hope they continue to be as successful as they have been.

kk: Well, I just wanted to give your side of it ... obviously the media here isn't going to focus on the Scott Shannon story as much as they are on the return of Fred Winston and Brant Miller and the new line-up at the station.

SS: I know ... and I want everyone to know in all sincerity that I'm not bitter ... I wish them all well.

kk: Well, sadly I feel that this is our loss here in Chicago. I know that I have certainly enjoyed listening to you here these past several years ... and you have always been very supportive of Forgotten Hits.

SS: Well, you're not going to find ANYBODY who loves the oldies ... or loves radio ... more than I do ... but I had a GREAT run there ... and it was a dream come true ... and I wish them nothing but good luck ... it's still a great radio station and they will continue to prosper.

WLS-FM: The Big Shake-Up ... After The Dust Has Settled

Consider this our Open Letter to Jan Jeffries at WLS-FM:

re: NOT QUITE WHAT I HAD IN MIND:
More shake-ups at WLS-FM ... our buddy Scott Shannon is gone ... never saw THAT one coming!!! And Brant Miller is back in the morning spot instead of Fred Winston, who'll now be doing afternoons, following Greg Brown, who is now handling mid-days. I don't quite get the logic of that move ... Winston is a seasoned morning drive personality and was tops in his field for ages. WLS already tried the Brant Miller Experiment a couple of years ago and it failed miserably ... that's what prompted the move to bring Dave Fogel in in the first place. With Scott Shannon gone, the rest of the evening is rounded out by old stand-bys John "Records" Landecker and Dick Biondi. (Tom O'Toole and Danny Lake will still do weekends and fill-in spots.) This is a vintage Chicago Oldies line-up ... making me think that Dave Fogel's parting comment was not so far off the mark after all. When asked why he thought things didn't work out for him at the station, Fogel quipped "I'm too YOUNG to work at WLS." (Hmm ... there may be something to that remark!)

Miller, Winston, Landecker and Biondi have long-standing ties to WLS back in their hey day so it's kinda neat that they're still associated with the station. But instead of capitalizing on that rich, Big 89 heritage, it sounds like WLS is already calling itself "Chicago's Classic Hits Station", making me wonder what other kind of format changes may be coming. Stay tuned! (kk)

Honestly, the greatest success stories of these jocks is deeply rooted in the '60's and '70's ... wouldn't it be cool if WLS became the oldies station in town most focusing on this music ... and even some '50's thrown in, too, since that's the music that inspired these jocks to get into the business in the first place. Everybody else in town is already playing the '70's, '80's and '90's ... devote and dedicate yourselves to the era of WLS' hey-day, let these guys exhibit their winning personalities and you just may see things turn around for the station. As we said before, if the jocks are only going to be allowed to do 30, 60 and 90 drop-ins between blocks of songs ... and the bulk of that time is being spent giving out the station's call letters ... then ANYBODY can play the music. Give us a REASON to tune in ... you certainly have the talent onboard to do so. (Too bad Tommy Edwards is already locked in over at K-Hits ... he would have made a great mid-day personality, too, tying in with WLS' Golden Past!) kk

When are they going change the call letters to WJMK?
Dave Kovarik
LOL ... For the benefit of all of our out-of-town readers, Fred Winston, Greg Brown and Dick Biondi were ALL part of Magic-104 when they let everybody go to switch over to the ill-fated Jack-FM. John "Records" Landecker also spent a fair amount of time there. (In fact, we used to wake up to his morning show every weekday ... it was fun because from 5:30 to 6:00, he'd play nothing but stuff OFF the play list, making it the most entertaining half hour on radio at the time!) 104.3 is now K-Hits, another "classic hits" station, playing the music of the '60's, '70's and (especially) '80's. (kk)

The new WLS-FM line-up kicks off today.  However, despite this classic, antique WLS line-up, apparently "oldies" is no longer in the mix for the station.  In an interview with Chicago Media Columnist Robert Feder, Jeffries said “It is clearly a shift of format from oldies to classic hits.

We will not use that word.” Above all, the presentation will be unique, Jeffries said. “We will be fresh to the market and will have instant relevance that is unduplicated. And that will be compounded by the fact that we have the most legendary [talent] lineup in Chicago — no question about it. Probably in the whole country.”

Hmmm ... "no other radio station like it"?!?!?  Scan your radio dial this morning .. you'll find these same artists playing on virtually every radio station in town, up and down the dial, ad nauseum.  '60's to '80's Music is what K-Hits was just based on.  (The elimination of the word "oldies" offers a much clearer picture as to why Scott Shannon is no longer with the station ... he lives and breathes the oldies ... and to great success, I might add ... his True Oldies Channel is now broadcast on over one hundred stations across the country!)

I also love the comment posted by one of Feder's readers (ooo, now THAT has a really cool ring to it!) after Rob posted this picture of the new WLS-FM line-up:

They're not going to use the word "oldies"? Someone needs to take a good look at that photograph up above there.
Profzed

And isn't THIS interesting ... after my "Friday Flash" rave-out about bringing Personality Radio back to WLS, readers responding to Robert Feder's column proved again that we are not alone in this opinion ... check out some of these comments that we found posted on Feder's site:

Wow! What a lineup! Reminds me of the days when radio stations actually had personalities on them. All these guys are pros, gentlemen, and all around good people.. Best of luck to all of them.
Mark Edwards

Yes - but are they going to be allowed to talk and have a personality? You can't say much in the few seconds they get 3 - 4 times an hour. All of these people are much too talented not to be given some freedom to talk and interact with their audience.
A Listener

It's like I'm in high school, again!! Although I love the oldies music, I hope they allow these guys to talk and entertain the audience with their great personalities. Ater all, radio IS entertainment!!!
The Red Winger

How much do these guys actually talk each hour?
A Serious Question

Are you reading this, Jan Jeffries?  Are you getting the message? Do you sense a certain theme here? How is it possible that radio continues to ignore what its listeners really want in favor of what they THINK is best for their listeners?!?! Here is a public plea to PLEASE pay attention to your listeners for a change ... it just may turn the whole industry around if a few of the major stations did this. Otherwise, it feels a whole lot like The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame scenario ... we have NO voice in the outcome while you tell us what we're supposed to like. That isn't of any benefit to the community ... and radio is supposed to serve the community. The industry has truly lost sight of this ... which I believe has greatly contributed to its demise these past couple of decades. Get back on track with what has proven to have worked in the past ... the results just may surprise you. (kk)

A quick recap of my original rave, posted last Friday ... this was before we knew that Scott Shannon no longer fit into the mix. (And speaking of that, how do you let go the highest rated jock on the station?!?! Shannon is one of the most recognized and honored voices in radio, winning Billboard's Broadcaster of the Year award multiple times ... he runs his own radio station, The True Oldies Channel, manning it 24/7, heard on over a hundred radio stations across the country and around the globe, thanks to the Internet. One can only hope that there is another Cumulus outlet here locally that might pick up Scott's True Oldies Channel again so that Chicagoans can listen live on the radio instead of having a computer nearby.

From Friday:
>>>I can't say that I'm broken-hearted over the announcement that Dave Fogel is no longer part of the WLS-FM team. I've made no secret of the fact that I never liked Fogel in the morning ... Chicago is a major market ... and WLS is a LEGENDARY radio station ... and while I hate to see ANY jocks out of work, we simply deserve better ... and have always had it ... but for SOME reason the Morning Drive Slot has been exceptionally weak these last several years ... and I don't understand why. There is SO much good talent out there (and much of it out of work.) While I don't wish unemployment on ANYONE (been there, done that), I hope this paves the way for Fred Winston's full time return to the station, something we've been campaigning for here in Forgotten Hits for the past several years.
But, that being said, if the station REALLY wants to go in "a different direction", then how about THIS concept ... put the personality back into radio. I've grown disgusted by having to sit through these talented on-air personalities with SO much to offer in the way of entertainment being restricted to getting 30, 60 and 90 second breaks after a block of songs, only to see them forced to use that time to repeatedly give out the call letters three times and say not much more. With decades of experience, guys like Scott Shannon, Fred Winston, Dick Biondi, Greg Brown, Tom O'Toole and Danny Lake can do SO much more for the station than give out station i.d.'s. Let them do what they were born to do ... entertain us! We already KNOW what station we're listening to ... we don't need to be reminded three times every fifteen minutes! If you want us to KEEP on listening, let these guys be themselves and entertain us!!! I've said it before ... we already KNOW the music ... it's been drummed into our heads for the past 40 years ... let these guys shine and be the reason we come HERE to hear it, rather than every other spot on the dial that's playing basically the exact same thing!!! WLS practically INVENTED "Personality Radio" ... I say bring it back because you've got the talent here to pull it off. THAT is what is going to make your station stand head and shoulders above the rest ... NOT hearing "94.7, WLS, playing The Steve Miller Band for the 64th time today on WLS, 94.7". (kk)

Tomorrow ... EXCLUSIVELY in Forgotten Hits ... we talk to Scott Shannon about life after WLS.  Don't miss it!  (kk)
