Essay #6:
THE 60'S MUSIC
Do you know a lot about 60's bands? the 1960's
had so many different types of bands. They ranged from the wild and crazy
Rolling Stones to a more quiet band like the Searchers. I like some of the bands
from the British Invasion.
One of the most popular bands of the British
Invasion was The Beatles. The Beatles had several #1 hit songs like "I want to
Hold your Hand". Their big break was on the Ed Sullivan Show. The band had 4
members, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and John Lennon. George
Harrison died from cancer and John Lennon was shot.
One of my favorite 60's Bands was the Animals.
The lead singer was Eric Burdon. The Animals most popular song was The House of
the Rising Sun. I liked the Animals music because it was more calm and had a
great beat. The way Eric Burdon held out his notes made the song feel more
country.
Overall the 60's was a great time for music.
There are several bands that are still together making music today, 50 years
later. The bands and sounds of the 60's are like the grandfathers of todays
music.
Essay # 7:
THE 1960'S
What time period in the 1900's interests you? Is
it the 1920's when blues and ragtime were popular? Is it the 1950's when Frank
Sinatra, Glen Miller, and Benny Goodman were popular? Or was it the 1930's, the
time of the great depression and swing music? Well, the 1960's interests me the
most.
The 1960's was a time of a wide variety of
music. Types ranging from Rock & Roll to the Californian sound. Popular
singers included The Beatles, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, and the Beach
Boys. One band, Herman's Hermits, had an innocent sound, unlike the Rolling
Stones. The Rolling Stones had a diry , raw, nitty gritty sound. The Animals
sang rock blues. Possibly one of the most well known bands, The Beatles, either
sounded innocent, technical, or sang acid rock. Freddie and the Dreamers, had a
silly, comedic sound, singing songs like "Do the Freddie". The Beach Boys, sang
songs using the approach of the Californian sound. Janis Joplin, a female rock
singer, sang pure rock. The 1960's was the decade of many genres of
music.
Herman's Hermits was a band in the 1960's. They
used the be known as 'The Heartbeats'. Soon, they realized singer Peter Noone,
resembled a cartoon character, Sherman, and they changed their name to 'Herman's
Hermits. The British band from Manchester, soon had a record deal from Mickie
Most, and their first record, "I'm Into Something Good'. Herman's Hermits wasn't
just popular in Britain, but had two No. 1 hits in the USA, "Mrs. Brown You've
Got a Lovely Daughter", and a cover of Harry Champion's, "Henry the Eighth I
Am". Soon, the Monkees came onto the television, and 'shunned' Herman's Hermits,
decreasing them in popularity. Peter left the band soon after, and their name
will forever go down in the history of music.
The 1960's was a time of many types of music
like rock and roll, and R&B. Herman's Hermits, a band of the British
Invasion, were one of the popular groups during the 60's.
Hmm ... looks to me like THIS student may have been a little
"influenced" by his teacher's "noonatic"-like obsession with a certain charismatic young British pop star!?!?!? Then again, maybe he's smarter than all of us ... and just figured that this was simply the quickest and easiest way to earn an "A" on his paper!!! lol (kk)
Essay # 8
THE 60'S MUSIC
What decade of music do you like? Do you like
big bands from the 1940's? Or do you like disco from the 1970's? Maybe you like
rap from the 1990's? I like the British Invasion of the 1960's.
The British Invasion was a good happening with
many bands. The Beatles came in with such a unique sound, even cover songs done
by other groups don't sound as magnificent as The Beatles themselves performing
them. Herman's Hermits blew away the crowd with the Peter Noone, the lead
singer, who looked like JFK, and had a voice three times as good as his looks.
The Animals brought back the good old song of Ledbelly, "House Of The Rising
Sun". Herman's Hermits quickly followed with "Henry The VIII I Am", by Harry
Champion. The British Invasion brought rock and roll back from its drop out of
fame from the 50's. Everybody loved rock and roll again. The British Invasion
was a celebration of music.
The Beatles had so many huge performances. Ed
Sullivan must have liked The Beatles! He invited them in four times. One of
these times they sang 6 songs, including "I Want To Hold Your Hand", and "She
Loves You". When they appeared the fourth time, they also sang 6 songs including
"Help". On top of that, The Beatles had a concert in Shea Stadium. There they
sang many original songs and the cover song "Twist and Shout". The cover song
was even better than the Righteous Brothers' and the Isley Brothers' version.
Then The Beatles gave a satellite performance with "All You Need is Love".
Performances were huge for The Beatles.
When I listen to all of the bands I mentioned,
I'm reminded how The British Invasion was a great event that changed millions of
lives. Also when I hear The Beatles, I imagine the huge performances, which
changed concerts for generations to come.
Looks to me like Student #8 may have been looking over the shoulder
of Student #7 ... that first sentence is just a little bit TOO familiar! Then
again, I like the fact that some of these kids saw that the music of the '60's
reached beyond The British Invasion ... although I must admit it's MY favorite
music of the decade, too! (kk)

Remember when kids went back to school AFTER
Labor Day?!?!? That was always kind of the benchmark for when summer was over
and the new school year was ready to begin ... but for YEARS now, school's been
starting earlier (and extending longer) than when we were kids.
But since we're all about the oldies, we're still
doing it the old fashioned way ... and saluting THIS week as "Back To School"
Week in Forgotten Hits.
And it's all being done with a little help from
long-time Forgotten Hits Reader (and professional school teacher) Shelley
Sweet-Tufano, who has the awesome pleasure of teaching her fifth grade
students about the music of the '60's ... now how ultra-cool is THAT gig?!?!
And she gets PAID for it, too!!!
Shelley sent us the final essays of eleven of her
students to run in Forgotten Hits. We told her we would ... and then poll our
readers to pick the one that best captures the spirit of the era. (We want to
see which kids got the most out of their lessons ... so we're looking for
comprehension here ... as well as expressive writing ... how well do they convey
what they've learned to other people interested in learning about the music of
the '60's? ... you get the idea ... but we need YOUR help in determining a
winner.)
Everything's going out exactly as it was written
(with no spelling or grammatical corrections) ... and they're also going out
"blind" without any students' names ... in fact, WE don't even know who wrote
what ... we want you to judge solely on the merit and criteria stated
above.
We'll be running these all week long ... so give
them a look-over and then be prepared to vote for YOUR favorites. (Maybe we'll
even award the winner a special prize ... like a '60's CD compilation or
something!)
Here comes Essay #1:
THE BEATLES
What was your favorite Band of the
60's? Were they a wild band, like The Animals? Or was it a band that has been
preforming for a long time, like the Rolling Stones? My favorite band of the
60's was The Beatles!!!
The Beatles are EPIC. Their songs
want to make me get up and start dancing.
The Beatles are made up of George
Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles made a
lot of hit songs. Afterward, sadly, they broke up in 1970, so each of them could
continue in separate musical careers. Sadly, Paul and Ringo are the only Beatles
members that are still alive. John was shot outside his apartment in New York
City in 1980. George died of cancer in 2001.
In 1967, the Beatles sent out a
broadcast to express love. Their song "All You Need Is Love" was broadcasted to
an audience of 400 million - 700 million people. Their preformance were
colorized using color photographs taken at the preformance. Their
preformance had parts of the French national anthem and some of their other
songs. Their preformance was deffinetly a worldwide hit.
Like I said, the Beatles are
AWESOME! From writing some of the top hit songs to preforming a worldwide
broadcast, the Beatles deffinetly have what it takes to be anyones top choice
for the 60's.
Essay #2:
1960's
What was your favorite band from
the British Invasion? Was it the down to earth hard rocker Janis Joplin? Was it
the wild crazy Animals? Or was it the shy looking Peter Noone? My favorite band
was the Beatles.
The Beatles were Paul McCartney.
Ringo Starr, John Lennon, and George Harrison. This band always sang in Harmony.
The beatles were built in Liverpool, in the 1960's. Everyone loved their rock
songs. The beatles were very successful in the UK and the US. The
Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan Show. Performing "Help", "She Loves You"
and many others. The Beatles made a lot music in their carrer.
Their music was made for everyone
but teens mostly adored this music. The Ed Sullivan show was very popular. So
when the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show a lot of people watched so they
became more popular. Always Remember the Beatles.
The Rolling Stones are an English
Rock Band formed in London in 1962. The Rolling Stones quickly became successful
in North America in the 1960's. They released 22 Studio alblums in the UK, 24 in
the US, elevin live in the US and more complications. You might think the
Rolling Stones only played Rock. No they played Rock, blues, blues rock, r &
b, and rock & roll. It was unique but everyone loved them.
A big accomplishment for the
Rolling Stones was that when they made their alblum "Sticky Fingers" in 1971
began a streak of 8 straight in a row Studio albums reaching #1 in the US. 1
song by the Rolling Stones is "Tell me (you're coming Back). The Rolling Stones
had a rock & roll side and also a sweet side.
I love the Rolling
Stones.
Next time you hear the Beatles or
the rolling Stones, remember they were big bands and superstars.
Essay #3
THE 60'S MUSIC
What do you like about the 1960's?
Is it about the art and architecture like skyscrapers and paintings? Can it be
about fads and fashion such as skateboards and the crew cuts hairstyle for men?
How about books and literature for example the The Silent Spring or
authors like Maurice Sendak? What I like is the music, specifically the
British Invasion.
What was the British Invasion? Well
the British Invasion was mainly British rock n roll that grew rapidly. The
British Invasion played a major role in rock n roll. Many British bands from
U.K. came to U.S. to perform. It was a mix of rock and roll and blues. It became
really famous in the U.S. Their smash hit was "She loves you" sung by the
Beatles. The Beatles were also known to be the 1st British group to have long
lasting success when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. The other bands
followed them once they were on the show. Some of the other bands were The
Searchers, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Animals and The Rolling Stones. The
British Invasion really did affect the music in the 1960's.
The British Invasion was full of
bands, I mean full! Some were The Animals, The Beatles, Freddie and the
Dreamers, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers and many, many more [just can't name
them all]. The Beatles were epic and very famous for their music. It would make
girls cry. Their best songs were "Love Me Do", Hey Jude" and "Let it be". Those
were SOME of the Beatles's top songs. the Animals was also a good band. The
Animal's music was known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep voice. Their
signature song was 'House of the Rising Sun" followed by hits such as "We gotta
get out of this place", "It's my life" and "Don't be Misunderstood". Now,
Freddie and the Dreamers. They had a number of hits from 1963 to 1965. Freddie
would sometimes dance around the stage with his arms and legs flying all over
the place. Some of their hits were "If you gotta make a Fool of Somebody", "I'm
Telling you Now", "You were made for me" and "Over you". There is also The
Rolling Stones. They were a really good band. They were ranked #10 on "The
Billboard Top All-Time Artists" and 2nd place on the Billboard Hot 100. Their
top hits were "Angie", "Sympathy for the Devil" and also "Gimme Shelter". Last
but not least we have the band The Searchers. The Searchers top hits were
"Sweets for my Sweet", "Needles and Pins" and "Sugar and Spice". Those are some
of the band part of the British Invasion!
See, the British Invasion really
was a big part of the 1960s! If affected our music these days. I also learned a
lot of the 1960s too. Who knew the bands and what the British Invasion was,
until you read this! I found this really interesting. How about
you?
Essay # 4
THE 1960'S
What band or singer do you like of
the 1960's? Could it be the Rolling Stones, a British boy band from London who
was a successful band? Or could it be Herman's Hermits, a huge hit band that
were young which made the crowd go wild whenever they appeared on stage? Do you
adore Janis Joplin, a solo singer that expressed her gruesome childhood in her
songs which made the listeners tear? My favorite was not a singer, but a very
famous boy band known as the Beatles.
The members of the Beatles were all
unique. Let's start off with Paul McCartney, also known as the person that
played the bass with his left hand. Paul McCartney started producing songs at
age sixteen, but a majority of them did not get to be a big hit. One of his
famous songs was Yesterday. This fabulous song was a very well written hit. The
Beatles did sing this song together, and let me point out that they sounded
amazing! There has been an abundance of rumors that Paul has died, well don't
listen to all of the nonsense! He is still alive and well, in fact he is 69
years old. Let me introduce you to John Lennon who played the rhythm guitar.
John was born on October 9, 1940, but sadly died on December 8, 1980. He was
shot by a cruel man named Mark David. No one knew why he did such a thing, but
my theory was that he either didn't like the idea of the Beatles breaking up or
he was just jealous of John's fame.
Anyways, John Lennon was the person who
created the Beatles at his hometown in Liverpool, England with Paul and George.
Once Ringo joined the band they were on their way to the road fandom. Speaking
of Ringo, let's learn more about him! Ringo Starr is one of the few members of
the Bearles who are still alive. If you are wondering Ringo's age is 71. Ringo
was the replacement of the original drummer Pete Best. Since Ringo joined the
band in the year of 1962 the band went famous. Teenagers all over the world
exploded in screams whenever the Beatles sang. After the Beatle's breakup on
April 1970, all of the Ringo fans could still listen to him because he became a
solo singer. George Harrison is known to me as the diverse instrument Harrison.
The reason I think of him this way is because his is the only one who knows how
to play crazy instruments from different countries such as the sitar. The
original instrument George plays is the lead guitar and he was excellent playing
it George Harrison died of throat cancer which later on leaded to lung cancer
which took his life on the year of 2001. Do you know why he got different types
of cancer? Well, smoking! Back then scientist never knew that smoking cigarettes
or chewing tobacco could kill you. On the bright side though, we can at least
think that he is living happily after up in heaven with all of the other famous
singers and band members.
Wow! All of the members of the Beatles
great!
The Beatles were such a great hit
that they even appeared o the Ed Sullivan Show. The Ed Sullivan Show was
something that singers and bands dreamt about being on. Being on this show is
like being nominated for the Grammies. The Beatles first appeared on the Ed
Sullivan Show on Februaru 9, 1964 to kick off their first time ever U.S.
performance and on American TV. About 73 million people watch them perform which
was the all time record. Later on that month on February 16, 1964 the Beatles
were again invited to be on the Ed Sullivan Show and so they did. This time
about 70 million viewers watched them. Last time they were in New York, but this
time they performed from Miami Beach, Florida. The songs that they performed
were She Loves You, All My Loving, This Boy, I Saw Her Standing There, and I
Want to Hold Your Hand. The crowd went crazy that night, so many girls crying
and screaming on top of their lungs when the Beatles performed. Beatle Mania was
very high that night! For the third time of that month, the Beatles were then
again invited to join Ed Sullivan on his show. Ed Sullivan just couldn't get
enough of the talented boys. On February 23, 1964 they performed for their third
time which broke the all time record of any band or solo singer to perform on
the Ed Sullivan Show. The Beatles celebrated by singing Twist and Shout, Please
Please Me, and my all time favorite I Want to Hold Your Hand. The Beatles
performed on the Ed Sullivan Show a lot, but every second was
great!
The Beatles were a very successful
band! Learning about how their unique and being on the Ed Sullivan Show really
taught me that even a small thing can become huge history changing things. I
can't wait to learn more about the Beatles!
Essay # 5
Sadly,Essay Number Five had to
be eliminated. At first, Shelley removed the final paragraph as she explains
below ... but then she found various other segments copied word-for-word
throughout the piece. (Wouldn't it have been funny if the student plagiarized
Forgotten Hits for his school paper?!?! lol)
Respecting her wishes,
we are NOT going to run Essay #5 ... but we WILL have another batch for you to
review tomorrow ... so we'll see you then! (kk)
I am removing the concluding paragraph on
this essay. You can find it word for word on the website. I need to make note of
the fact that in 5th grade, we do not focus on conclusions. That is curriculum
for 6th grade. We had a one-day lesson for the entire year on conclusions, and
only so they could end the writings on their science projects. I am not happy
about the plagiarism. We DO cover that. This student is a good writer and
needn't have resorted to it, no matter how insecure they were about their
ability on conclusions. 'Nuff said.

Righting a couple of wrongs from our Sunday Comments Page:
The songwriting team of Hal David and Burt Bacharach broke through with TWO back-to-back hits in 1958, first with "The Story Of My Love", a cross-over hit for country superstar Marty Robbins (#1 Country, #30 Pop), followed my the aforementioned "Magic Moments" by Perry Como, B-Side to his monster hit "Catch A Falling Star" (and a #21 Hit in its own right.) Bacharach says (in hindsight) that NEITHER of these songs are typical of his song writing style ... but they were looking for a hit. (In fact, for a short while Bacharach and David mentored under the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.) I erroneously credited those insightful lyrics of "The Blob" to Hal David when, in fact, they were written by Hal's older, far-more-prolific brother, Mack. In that same piece, I mentioned the 1964 Jack Jones hit "Wives And Lovers" ... we've certainly had our share of fun with this one over the years ... today perhaps as politically incorrect as Phil Spector's "He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss"!!! (kk)

You know what I'm talkin' about, girls ... the fastest way into a man's heart is to sneak in through the stomach and the groin ... and the one and onlyTRUEway to hold on to your man is to be a whore in the bedroom and a master chef in the kitchen! It's a proven fact ... you need to keep your man satisfied every minute of every day ... and in every way ... or he will most surely stray and slip away!
Dress to the hilts ... why, don't you know that there are girls at the office who'll do ANYTHING to snatch your man right out from under you ... and these girls be dressin' FINE! (Why do you think June Cleaver wore a dress and pearls for Thursday night dinner?!?!? And what do you think Wally and the Beav were REALLY talking about all night long while their parents were doing the bang-shang-a-lang in the bedroom next door?!?!? Of course, they actually had to push their two separate beds back together to DO the bang-shang-a-lang, but that's a DIFFERENT story!!!) You don't believe me??? How many OTHER parents do you know that openly called their boy BEAVER and then lovingly smiled at each other?!?!? Come on!!! Girls, temptation is EVERYWHERE!!! You had better be prepared to spend a good amount of time down on all fours, scrubbing those floors on your hands and knees in the afternoon ... and then additional time, as necessary, this evening in that same position in the boudoir!
This certainly seemed to be the logic back in 1963 (and you can't tell me that SOME of you haven't heard this line of reasoning before) whenJACK JONEScut the Top 15 HitWIVES AND LOVERS. For all that's been said about the Sexual Revolution of the '60's, the Women's Liberation Movement (hell, you girls were publicly burning your bras ... and even had your own cigarette there for a while!) and the great strides made for Equal Rights, JONES certainly came across as a chauvinistic pig when he recorded this track! (Who'd have thought that just a few years later he'd be recruiting and inspiring couples to take a cruise onTHE LOVE BOAT?!?!?)
WIVES AND LOVERSwas written by the dynamic duo of MOR music of the '60's,HAL DAVIDandBURT BACHARACHand, while the melody is pure Burt, Hal David has just GOT to be regretting these lyrics since the moment he committed them to paper!
The title and song were inspired by theJANET LEIGHmovie of the same name (although the song was written and recorded later and was not featured in the film) and, ironically, the original A-Side of the single was deemed to beTOYS IN THE ATTIC, the title song from yet another movie, starringDEAN MARTIN.(It was felt at the time that this would be the more likely vehicle to garner attention.)
The story goes thatBURT BACHARACHwas so incensed over his song being delegated to the B-Side that he went back into the studio to recut the track with pop vocal croonerVIC DAMONE. Deejays around the country, however, were sharp enough to flip the record over and it wasJACK JONESwho enjoyed a #12 showing withWIVES AND LOVERS. (TOYS IN THE ATTIC, by the way, peaked at #92!)

Just look at the lyrics to "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?"
Write them out for your readers to reflect upon ... and perhaps the words to What The World Needs Now ...
He would have been recognized no matter WHEN he existed; having a drink with Shakespeare, consulting with the Bible editors, playing cards with Irving Berlin, or being covered by The Beatles - makes no difference. Hal David would have left an indelible mark no matter where or when he lived - We are just so lucky he did it in OUR midst; with what appeared to be a calm soul with nary an irritation.
He spoke for so many, Dionne, B.J., Jackie, Dusty, but I think Dionne was his best whisper to the world in that she understood so well; it seemed as if she had written those words, every nuance was exactly where it should have been.
What an amazing talented, original man he was walking this earth - Our loss is only in his physical being because his words will warm this Earth as long as it exists.
But that's another problem altogether ...

Great idea ... and I'm going to add "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" to that list ... some of the most clever lyrics ever written ... and, from what I understand, they knocked that one out in a little over an hour because it was decided that the musical they were working on, "Promises, Promises", needed a duet for a particular scene. In fact, Bacharach was in the hospital with what would turn out to be pneumonia ... so David jotted down some quick ideas and read them to Burt over the phone. Hal David says it's the fastest melody he's EVER seen Burt Bacharach create ... before or since! (kk)

We just recovered over 2500 lost Forgotten Hits files dating all the way back to 2003 ... (now that's what I call a productive weekend!!!) Honestly, it feels like we've hit the motherlode! Over time, we'll sort through all of this ... and bring you classic pieces from yester-year that you may have missed back in the day when Forgotten Hits was distributed strictly as an emailed newsletter ... or simply forgotten about all together. Well ... since you asked ... let me tell you how many times I turn off each and every one of these songs each and every week ... here is MY interpretation of The Top 20:
#20 - 15 times a week; #19 - 12 times a week; #18 - 6 or 7 times a week; #17 - EVERY TIME IT COMES ON ... which is AT LEAST 25 times a week; #16 - DITTO ... I turn this off EVERY time it comes on ... which is also at least 25 times a week; #15 - I will listen to this one ALMOST every time ... yeah, it's played out and over-used ... but there's still something magical about this track ... you almost can't help but feel good when it comes on; #14 - Almost every time it comes on ... which is probably close to 20 times a week; #13 - EVERY TIME IT COMES ON - for me, this has become one of the most boring and repetitive songs on the radio for me ... and the truth is, it just wasn't that big a hit to begin with in the first place; #12 - Another one I'll listen to MOST of the time ... unless I'm button-pushing just to see what else is on, I'll pretty much listen to most of Michael Jackson's stuff; #11 - EVERY time it comes on ... another 25 times a week ... and that's a shame because I have always loved this song ... but radio over-saturation has completely RUINED this song for me. The only time I'll listen to it all the way through today is if I'm sitting in the audience for a "Jersey Boys" performance!; #10 - I'll turn this one off about half the time it comes on ... which means I still get to hear it 11 or 12 times a week; #9 - EVERY TIME IT COMES ON ... and this will remain the case until the end of time ... I don't EVER need to hear this song again ... EVER!!!; #8 - Another song that's been ruined for me ... it's gotta be the most-played song on radio today ... in fact, I've gotten SO sick of THIS song, that I find it hard to listen to ANYTHING by Journey now ... and that's just wrong!!!; #7 - About half the times it comes on ... which still gives me about 8-10 listens per week; #6 - Honestly, I don't hear this one that much anymore ... so I'll typically let this one play; #5 - Another one that radio has ruined for me ... an incredible record that I have a hard time listening to anymore; #4 - EVERY TIME IT COMES ON ... this is the one that Scott Shannon likes to refer to as "Kent Kotal's favorite song" on The True Oldies Channel ... thankfully he only says that once or twice out of the 66 times he plays it each week; #3 - I still like "Sherry" ... there are SO many GREAT Four Seasons songs that DON'T get played ... why do they have to play the same three or four over and over and over again ... they've been done to death!; #2 - This was once my all-time favorite Eagles song ... but oversaturation has ruined this one for me, too. Have you noticed how nowadays you hear the "live" / "Hell Freezes Over" version almost as often as you hear the original studio hit? Maybe all the big-wig, high-paid consultants think that this is one way to break up the monotony ... here's a hint: It's not working, guys!!! We turn THIS one off, too!; #1 - Was there ever any doubt that this one would come in at #1? And here's a twist ... I can still listen to The Beatles' original version every now and then ... because it's The Beatles ... and because it really is a great record. But Paul McCartney has ruined this song for me ... I don't EVER need to see or hear him perform it live again ... because it's been the EXACT SAME live performance each and every time for the past 30 years now ... the most cliched, over-blown version imaginable. He's done it to death. It's time to put this one away for a few years ... give it a rest ... and then maybe we'll appreciate hearing it again ... because it really IS a great song ... you've just done it to the point that there's no affection left. You have drained every last drop of affection out of me that I once held for this song. (kk)
And let's not forget Ron Smith's Labor Day Top 500 ... for years now, radio stations have compiled (by way of listeners' votes) lists of The Top 500 Favorites ... typically, these countdowns have run over Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekends.
Ron Smith (www.oldiesmusic.com) has been compiling these lists since 1997 on his website. (Beginning in 2005, it became a bi-annual countdown ... so the most recent results posted are the 2011 Survey ... but it gives you a pretty good idea what the listeners most want to hear.)
Speaking of One Hit-Wonders, there seems to be disagreement on which record really WAS the biggest hit. I always thought Zager and Evans', "In the Year 2525" was the champ, but later, it was Debby Boone's, "You Light Up My Life" that knocked the duo out of the top spot. Well, tell me if I'm wrong. If we are talking about the Top 40, and ONLY the Top 40, Debby Boone's hit would be on top, but if we are talking about the Hot 100, and songs that charted, Zager and Evans' hit would be king of the one-hit wonders, as Debby had a couple of songs that made the Hot 100, but not the Top 40, so she would be disqualified. What think you?

I asked Rich Appel how he went about compiling his list of The Top 100 One Hit Wonders which was, by the way, based on The Top 40 Charts of Billboard and Cash Box Magazine.
Here's how the list was compiled:
* To qualify, an artist had to have - or sing on - just one national top 40 hit.
* Rank was based on a point system I devised years ago (and just unearthed!), weighted along with whether a song hit #1 on BB or CB, weeks at #1, total weeks on top 100 and if the song still stands the test of time based on a rank of current airplay (2012 to date).

I can tell you this ... because Rich's list went through 1999, there are a few songs near the top that may come as surprises to many of the oldies fans on our list. I was surprised, too, by a couple of the lower showings, especially for songs that were really big hits when first release and have clearly stood the test of time ever since. (The most obvious one to me, of course, was "Vehicle", since Rich featured The Ides Of March track "One Hit Wonder" as sort of his "theme song" for this whole countdown. "Vehicle" was a #2 national hit ... and I'll bet I still hear it at least twenty times a week now ... yet it placed at #77 in The Top 100 One-Hit Wonders countdown.)
As for your two inquiries, both records finished near the top ... and I will tell you that Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" placed higher than Zager and Evans' "In The Year 2525" by four places ... but NEITHER one of these came in at #1.
