A Monday Morning Quickie!

Such a Great List of Number One Easter Day Songs in Forgotten Hits Sunday!

So many memories for me as a young teen through my early years of being on the radio! I played every one of those on air probably a thousand times each!

>>>April 10th, 1955 - THE BALLAD OF DAVY CROCKETT - Bill Hayes  (4th week at #1)  kk

Wish I still had my Old Official Davy Crockett Coonskin Cap that I had as a kid!

But then, artificial fur or not, mine quite possibly would be pretty rag-tag today!

CB ( which stands for "Coonskin Boy!" )

Chuck also sent us this Dual Holiday Greeting …

HAPPY EASTER and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Kent,

While I have the Top 3333 list, how do I reference it so others might see the whole thing, as opposed to bits and pieces? I have several newbies who are interested in FH and I want this to be an introduction

Jack

One of my goals this year is to better organize that website -

A lot of the videos are no longer available for viewing - so it really needs updating

In addition, I have been wanting to revamp some of the titles and standings to keep them a bit more up to date, taking into consideration some of the feedback given as to which songs really don't belong on a list designed around the Classic Rock format – adding some deserving titles that were missed simply because nobody ever nominated them - and my on-going monitoring of airplay since.  (Factoring in, of course, the reality that just because they play something this often, doesn't necessarily mean it's what the listeners REALLY want to hear ... as it seems that in many ways, we've kinda drifted back to that old "same old 300 songs" syndrome again.)  The expanded timeframe of more ‘80’s and even ‘90’s music doesn’t really set well with the format originally established when Classic Rock reached its hey-day … and, from what I’ve seen and heard, I think the true fans of this genre oppose this expansion.

Unfortunately, ALL of this takes FAR more time than I have to give right now - and it's frustrating as hell ... because ANOTHER one of my goals for this year was to get SOME radio station to count down the entire list this year, once it has been updated.  (Not likely to happen since we're already a third of the way thru April and I haven't done squat!  lol)

So for right now, it's all I've got.  That's why the excel spread sheet that I sent out is (at least for now) the best source - especially since you can sort it in any variety of ways:  countdown order, final ranking order, by artist or by song title for reference.  (Believe me, if it was as easy as simply posting a version of this list “as is,” I would have done that MONTHS ago!!!)

Stay tuned - I haven't totally given up hope yet!

Meanwhile, if you’d like a copy of the list as it currently stands, just drop me an email and I’ll be happy to send you a copy.

Or, you can view it in segments here:

Interesting …

P Diddy now claims that he was only joking when he said he pays Sting $5000 a day in royalties for the use of Sting’s “Every Breath You Take” snippet in his own #1 Hit, “I’ll Be Missing You.”  But I’m not so sure …

Previous documentation dating back over the past several decades would indicate otherwise.

On Friday, April 7th, Diddy wrote on Twitter:

“I want y’all to understand I was joking!  It’s called being Facetious! Me and @OfficialSting have been friends for a long time! He never charged me $3K or $5K a day for Missing You. He probably makes more than $5K a day from one of the biggest songs in history.”

Here's another great Micky Dolenz concert review …

From our Atlantic City spy, AC GUY (Friday night at Ovation Hall) 4-7-23):

"Micky Dolenz brings joy to the nearly sold-out Ovation Hall in Atlantic City. The show integrates a live concert with home movies, outtakes, and classic bits from the TV show that work parallel to Micky’s familiar vocal style, live stage presence and the shows narrative.

Unlike other concert performances that use visual images to augment their music, this is perhaps the only show where using the video medium is exactly spot on to the way we consumed the Monkees and their music. It fits perfectly.

The band was sharp, tight, and benefited by Coco Dolenz’ backing vocals. Dolenz’ love for each band member is obvious in a section of the show devoted to individually highlighting David, Michael and Peter, through a montage of clips projected on the screens. The show is very well paced. It made me realize how, this band, and ultimately, its members breaking from “the man,” were responsible for bringing the culture revolution of the 1960’s to a wider audience in the living rooms of American kids.

It was the best two hours I have spent in a long, long time. This show and this band were more important to us, and the time, then is realized. Micky shows us how much love existed amongst each of the Monkees. The audience can’t help but connect with the love they have for the characters on the show and each of the boys, and we are left feeling nothing short of joy throughout the performance."

Hi Kent,

HAPPY EASTER TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!

Looking forward to the Grammy special on The Beach Boys!!!

Noticed that the Queen Concert October 30th and 31st at the United Center is sold out.  I am an Adam Lambert fan since his days on American Idol! The closest singer to duplicate Freddie Mercury, don't you think?

And if you ever want to put some "pep" in your life, go to YouTube and plug in Blondie and their 1979 New Jersey Concert closing their show with "Get It On, Bang a Gong"!!!!  Glad they made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Deborah Harry is the best front singer and what a band,

starting with Chris Stein on the rhythm guitar!

That concert didn't need all the special effects they use now ...

They have been on tour recently … hope they come back to Chicago.

Keep Rockin', Kent!

Carolyn

PS How is your daughter doing?

Funny you should mention Blondie … I have been listening to quite a bit of their stuff lately.  Despite an incredible string of four #1 Hits in just three years, I think they have been vastly underrated in the overall scheme of things.  (But the FANS knew it was good!!!)

Sorry to hear that about the Queen concerts … will have to do some digging, as we, too, were hoping to see that show.  (I think you’ll find that tickets are ALWAYS available … it just depends on how much you’re willing to pay for them!)

As for Paige, thank you for asking.  She’s actually in Kansas City right now, rehearsing for a play that kicks off next month.  We’re making the 8-hour road trip in May to see it.  It’s a new adaptation of the Peter Pan story, called “Wendy” … and Paige snagged one of the leads as Tiger Lily!  So we’re pretty exciting about that.  (kk)

Ian Bairnson has passed away.  PILOT is one of my all-time fave bands and always was/is great to listen to lift the spirits in these dark days in the world.  Ian was a huge part of it.

I saw this posted just in last half hour:

It is with deep sadness and regret that I let you know that my loving husband Ian Bairnson has passed away on Friday, 7th April.

Ian was the sweetest, kindest, loving husband I could ever have wished for and I take comfort that he is resting now up there in his very own piece of “Blue Blue Sky.”  Although Ian has left us, his musical legacy stays with us and will continue to delight and brighten our lives, as it did his, forever. I would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Frimley Park Hospital, the managers and carers at Lynwood Care Home and our families and close friends for the love and support they have provided us during these challenging years of Ian’s long battle with dementia.

Clark Besch

The Pilot Hit List is a short one … only “Magic” seemed to click with the US audience, peaking at #5 in all three major music trade publications in 1975.  (Today it is heard almost nightly in Ozempic Diabetes Medication commercials!)  kk

EASTER SUNDAY

We recently did a feature spotlighting every #1 Record that fell on a Friday the 13th during The Top 40 Era.

This time around, we're looking at all of the Easter Sunday #1's for that same time frame.

Since Easter Sunday seems to be kind of a "revolving holiday," that means that it has fallen as early as March 26th and as late as April 22nd during this stretch.  That's a spread of just about a month.  (My sister was born on Easter Sunday, 1959 ... the story we got handed when we were kids growing up was that The Easter Bunny brought her rather than the stork!)

So here you have EVERY Billboard #1 Record for Easter Sunday, 1955 - 1990!

April 10th, 1955 - THE BALLAD OF DAVY CROCKETT - Bill Hayes  (4th week at #1)

This popular television theme would prove to be one of the biggest hit records of the year!

April 1st, 1956 - THE POOR PEOPLE OF PARIS - Les Baxter (3rd week at #1)

Elvis would dethrone the orchestra leader a couple of weeks later with his first #1 Hit, "Heartbreak Hotel," which currently sits at #5 along with its tag-along B-Side, "I Was The One" this week in 1956.  (That's OK ... he'll take the crown NEXT Easter!)

April 21st, 1957 - ALL SHOOK UP - Elvis Presley (3rd week at #1 ... with still five more weeks to go on top)

Of course, by now, this was really no big surprise ...

Elvis was King, having already scored six other #1 hits during the past year!

April 6th, 1958 - TEQUILA - The Champs (3rd week at #1)

March 29th, 1959 - VENUS - Frankie Avalon  (3rd week at #1 for the new teen idol)

April 17th, 1960 - THEME FROM "A SUMMER PLACE" - Percy Faith (8th week at #1 ... and it would hang on for one more before falling to ... you guessed it, Elvis Presley ... with "Stuck On You")

April 2nd, 1961 - SURRENDER - Elvis Presley (2nd week at #1)

(Are we seeing some kind of a trend developing here???)

April 22nd, 1962 - You're not going to believe me when I tell you ...

GOOD LUCK CHARM by Elvis Presley - new at #1 in his first of two weeks on top of the charts

April 14th, 1963 - HE'S SO FINE - The Chiffons  (3rd of 4 weeks at #1)

March 29th, 1964 - SHE LOVES YOU - The Beatles (2nd week at #1)

[George was evidently paying close attention to the charts the previous Easter]

Looking back at early 1964, you could pretty well have predicted this one, too ...

The Beatles held down the #1 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart for 14 straight weeks beginning in late January ... I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND (7); SHE LOVES YOU (2) and CAN'T BUY ME LOVE (5) before finally being knocked out of the top spot by HELLO DOLLY by Louis Armstrong.  (Say what?!?!)  Then again, they also held down the Top Five positions on the chart this week, an unheard of feat at the time.

Later that year they fell victim to another surprising upset when Dean Martin would topple their #1 soundtrack hit A HARD DAY'S NIGHT after two weeks on top of the chart with his mega-hit EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY ... another case of the Old Guard showing the NEW Guard that they still had something left to show!

April 18th, 1965 - I'M TELLING YOU NOW - Freddie and the Dreamers (2nd week at #1)

Man, these guys were fun to watch!

April 10th, 1966 - (YOU'RE MY) SOUL AND INSPIRATION - The Righteous Brothers (1st of 3 weeks at #1)

What an incredible performance

March 26th, 1967 - HAPPY TOGETHER - The Turtles (1st of 3 weeks at #1)

April 14th, 1968 - HONEY - Bobby Goldsboro  (1st of 5 weeks at #1)

April 6th, 1969 - DIZZY - by our buddy Tommy Roe ... who just released a brand new album after all these years!!!  (DIZZY would top the Billboard Chart for four weeks in 1969 ... and this was his 4th and final week on top)

March 29th, 1970 - BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER - Simon and Garfunkel (5th of 6 weeks at #1, on its way to becoming the biggest record of the year)

April 11th, 1971 - JOY TO THE WORLD - Three Dog Night (1st of 6 weeks on top of the charts!)

April 2nd, 1972 - A HORSE WITH NO NAME - America  (3rd and final week at #1)

The guys are STILL out there playing to sold-out crowds across the country ...

And they STILL have not named that damn horse!!!

April 22nd, 1973 - TIE A YELLOW RIBBON ROUND THE OLE OAK TREE - Tony Orlando and Dawn  (2nd week at #1 - where they would stay for two more)

April 14th, 1974 - TSOP (THE SOUND OF PHILADELPHIA) - MFSP (featuring The Three Degrees) - 1st of two weeks at #1

March 30th, 1975 - LOVIN' YOU - Minnie Ripperton (1st and only week at #1)

April 18th, 1976 - DISCO LADY - Johnnie Taylor (4th and final week at #1 - and, as we learned recently, the first record to receive a Platinum Single Award)

April 10th, 1977 - DON'T GIVE UP ON US - David Soul (1st and only week at #1)

Way to go, Hutch!

March 26th, 1978 - NIGHT FEVER - The Bee Gees (another one you probably could have predicted)

This record spent 8 weeks at #1 that year ... and this was its third)

April 15th, 1979 - KNOCK ON WOOD - Amii Stewart (1st and only week at #1)

April 6th, 1980 - ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL, PART II - Pink Floyd (4th and final week at #1)

We're giving you the whole thing ... Parts 1 and 2

(Hey, it IS Easter after all!!!)

April 19th, 1981 - KISS ON MY LIST - Daryl Hall and John Oates  (3rd and final week at #1)

April 11th, 1982 - I LOVE ROCK 'N ROLL - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (5th week at #1 ... where it would remain for two more)

April 3rd, 1983 - BILLIE JEAN - Michael Jackson (I've been waiting for the Michael Jackson take-over ... and this was a big one ... #1 for 7 weeks .. before being displaced for a week, only to regain the top position with BEAT IT for another three)  This was BILLIE JEAN's 6th week at #1

April 22nd, 1984 - AGAINST ALL ODDS (TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW) - Phil Collins (2nd of three weeks at #1)

April 7th, 1985 - WE ARE THE WORLD - USA For Africa (1st of 4 weeks at #1) featuring an all-star cast, but conceived by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson

March 30th, 1986 - ROCK ME AMADEUS - Falco (2nd of 3 weeks at #1)

April 19th, 1987 - I KNEW YOU WERE WAITING (FOR ME) - Aretha Franklin and George Michael (2nd and final week at #1)

April 3rd, 1988 - GET OUTTA MY DREAMS, GET INTO MY CAR - Billy Ocean (who knocked Michael Jackson's MAN IN THE MIRROR out of the top spot for a two-week take-over ... this was Week #1)

March 26th, 1989 - ETERNAL FLAME - The Bangles (1st and only week at #1)

April 15th, 1990 - NOTHING COMPARES 2 U - Sinead O'Connor (1st of four weeks at #1)

Did you happen to notice that Easter did not fall on April 9th A SINGLE TIME during the 36 years that we just covered?!?!?

But TODAY (April 9th, 2023) is Easter Sunday ... so I hope you all enjoy a pleasant day with your families.  (kk)

DIDJAKNOW?

The reason Easter's calendar date moves around each year ... and the way the date of Easter Sunday is determined ... is the fact that Easter falls on the first Sunday after the date of The Paschal Full Moon, based on mathematical calculations, that falls on or after March 21. If the Full Moon happens to fall on a Sunday, then Easter is celebrated on the following Sunday.  (March 21st is the Church's date of the March Equinox, regardless of the time zone ... so, as we've seen above, Easter is prone to occur any time between late March and late April.)

For a complete list of EVERY Easter Sunday, 1600 - 2099, you can check this out!!!

THE WEEKEND COMMENTS

This headline certainly caught my eye …

Sting Now Paid $5,000 a Day for Diddy's Police Sample

Back in 1983, Sting and The Police topped Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart for eight weeks with their classic “Every Breath You Take.”  (You guys voted it the #74 Most Essential Classic Rock Song Of All-Time a couple of years ago.)

Then, in 1997, Puff Daddy sampled that tune as part of HIS #1 Hit “I’ll Be Missing You,” recorded as a tribute to his friend, The Notorious B.I.G..  It ALSO went on to top the chart for another 11 weeks.  (To say that The Police riff is a significant part of the song … and the song’s success … would be an understatement … it literally defines the song … and, being as familiar as it was by that time, Diddy’s rap tribute was an immediate smash.)

BOTH songs are considered classics today (albeit of somewhat different genres ...  which is to say that you won’t find Sean Combs, aka Puff Daddy, P.Diddy, Diddy, and countless other recordings on which he was involved, anywhere on our Classic Rock Essentials list.)

Well, apparently Diddy sampled Sting’s tune without his permission … in fact, he didn’t ask for it until AFTER his song had already been released … and in a 2014 court-decreed penalty for that little formality (or lack there of), he had to turn over ALL of the royalties earned for that record to that point … and a percentage thereafter.  That means that he has now paid out something to the tune of $1.8 million … and continues to pay, by his estimation, “$5000 a day” to Sting for the use of his tune.

Sting was outraged at the time … he told Rolling Stone Magazine “Those guys just take your shit, put it on a record and deal with the legality later,” going on to say that Elton John told him at the time, "'You gotta hear it … you’re gonna be a millionaire!'  I said, 'I am a millionaire!' He said, 'You’re gonna be a millionaire twice over!' I put a couple of my kids through college with the proceeds, and me and Diddy are good pals still.”  It is estimated that Sting earns about $170,000 a year in royalties for this little snippet.

But the funniest thing about that little snippet (well, I guess it’s not funny if you happen to be Police Guitarist Andy Summers!) is that Sting isn’t even on the segment used.  In fact, Summers is the only member of the band whose performance is heard on Diddy’s version.  (For the record, he was never credited as one of the song’s writers ... that distinction belongs to Sting alone.)  Summers says that Diddy “actually sampled my guitar, and that’s what he based his whole track on.”  Drummer Stewart Copeland’s not on it … Sting’s not even on it … the sample that Puff Daddy used is strictly Summers’ guitar riff!  (Personally, I think for $5000 a day, Sting could at least buy the guy lunch once in a while!!!)  kk

Hey Kent,
The Beatles also held down the Top 5 spots in Cash Box for the week ending April 4, 1964. As you indicate, a feat that really required one to spend some hard earned Ca$h to get the music you wanted to own and listen to over and over again.

Much as we did the other day, using information compiled by former Billboard Magazine Chart Beat Journalist and Researcher, Fred Bronson, Billboard Magazine has now compiled their OWN assessment of the impact of Sire Records on their Hot 100 Charts.

You’ll find a few discrepancies here and there as their point system method differs from Fred’s in some respects … but essentially it still represents the overall scheme of things, with Madonna once again reigning supreme.  (She’s got 29 of the Top 50 entries listed here … including 8 of The Top 10 and 17 of the Top 20!)

The back-up article can be found here:

https://www.billboard.com/pro/sire-records-top-50-hot-100-hits-madonna-pretenders-depeche-mode-talking-heads-erasure/#recipient_hashed=fa7e92da6f6e66bffcf0bcbf863670c6eb37d7159eb4d0ea1e44fecd5ec87eeb&recipient_salt=3a1d6b09af3b92ad7e38f8327cf18febeb049fd1c9a251b66957a07d9375735c

Sire Records’ Top 50 Hot 100 Hits recap is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. To ensure equitable representation of the biggest hits from each era, certain time frames were weighted to account for the difference between turnover rates from those years.

In the same issue, Ice T fondly remembers Seymour Stein, co-founder of Sire Records, who passed away recently …

This issue also reports that Stein, then a teen-aged high school student, had some input into creating what immediately became known as the industry standard:  The Hot 100 Pop Singles Chart.  (Unfortunately, this article is available to Billboard subscribers only, so linking to it won’t do you much good.  However, if any subscribers would like to offer up a recap as to Stein’s involvement, we would love to share that information as part of our on-going tribute to his legacy.)
