More Mid-Week News and Comments

Just ran across this. Very unusual... early take of "Yellow Submarine."

Yellow Submarine, Take One?

Yes, this was revealed as part of the new deluxe “Revolver” box set.

The biggest surprise, initially anyway, was that this started out as a John song …

I think everybody always imagined it being one of Paul’s (written for Ringo, of course) … more in line with his children-like, nursery rhyme story-telling.  (Keep listening to the subsequent versions to Mike’s link above and you’ll see the song begin to develop quickly.)

A key to the Paul connection was that it’s long been said that Donovan gave Paul the line, “Sky of blue, sea of green” to rhyme with “in a yellow submarine” and, as a payback for the favor, Paul did all the background hooping and hollering on Donovan’s big hit “Mellow Yellow.”  (I remember reading this back in one of the teen magazines back in 1966!)  And once you know it’s Paul, it’s as obvious as can be!

Also surprising is that John started the song from such a depressing place … “no one cares, no one cares” … but it IS really cool to see John and Paul still collaborating at this stage of their songwriting partnership.

SO many great new discoveries are to be found on this new set …

And if you want to pick up an even more collectible edition than the actual collectors’ edition, check out Clark Besch’s story below!  (kk)

Is that crazy guy, Capitol's Dave Dexter, at it again, changing Beatles releases for US market!

Apparently, the Target special issue of the new Revolver set has a mistake!

Both 1 CD with t-shirt AND the one vinyl with turntable mat have "REVOLER" on the spines -- not REVOLVER" with V.  Target one is supposedly "limited edition."  IF you decide to buy, better make sure, if just going for a rarity, which maybe it won't be?

Amazon CD might get corrected, maybe???

Kinda like the originally titled "Beatles Again" LP, changed but yet sometimes still on spines of (renamed) "Hey Jude" LP, I guess.

Capitol Records.  Gotta love em!

Is it WORSE than the Rhino NC6 "Colonized" CD being mistakenly titled "Colonization" on the actual CD!

FOR more than you ever wanted to know about Beatles business doings, read this …

With Thanksgiving creeping around the corner (we actually bought our first Christmas presents the other day!), Ray Graffia, Jr. of The New Colony Six reminds us …

The New Colony 6 will be providing the entertainment prior to the Elk Grove Village, IL, 2022 tree-lighting ceremony on the Friday after Thanksgiving, 11-25 … so if you’re local and haven't heard us in a while, I am pretty sure it's a freebie … so you cannot beat the price and we'll be doing many of our own tunes in addition to some holiday classics.
Some of us also participate with the Cornerstones of Rock and we will be at the Arcada Theatre the following night, on 11-26 … which is not a freebie, but includes most of those Chicago bands who followed us onto the charts once our song, "I Confess," broke down the doors to radio airplay!

Cornerstones' gigs are tremendous concerts so catch me at one of those, too, someday, okay?
Blessings!

Ray

If you’re one of those still curious about the secret identity of who Carly Simon is singing about in her 1973 #1 Smash Hit “You’re So Vain,” then this article is for you!

While it doesn’t really reveal anything new in the way of answers (or even hints!), it makes for a fascinating read … especially the part where she talks about her first meeting with Mick Jagger.  (Carly describes the moment as so mutually electric and intense that having sex would have actually cooled things down!)

She also reveals that Mick’s wife (Bianca at the time) warned James Taylor NOT to marry Carly because she and her husband were having an affair … but James went ahead and married her anyway.  (Said he didn’t believe her)

Hey, it’s a fun article, if you’ve got a few extra minutes!

They caught Micky Dolenz (with his sister Coco) at the L.A. premier of Aaron Sorkin’s “To Kill A Mockingbird” at The Pantages Theater last week.  (The new revival stars Richard Thomas as Atticus Finch … and the reviews are good!)  kk

Rumor has it that Micky may be doing a little bit of acting of his own in the not-too-distant future … stay tuned to these pages for more details.  (kk)

Dan McCafferty, original lead singer of the group Nazareth (“Love Hurts, #8, 1976), passed away earlier this week.  “Love Hurts” ranked at #993 according to your votes in our TOP 3333 MOST-ESSENTIAL CLASSIC ROCK SONGS OF ALL-TIME Poll.  (Their track “Hair Of The Dog” also made the list, coming in at #1719.)

Although no official cause of death was given, McCafferty retired from performing in 2013 due to a case of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that restricted his ability to breathe.  (kk)

Andy Taylor's diagnosis hit home to me on Monday. While I can take or leave Duran Duran, I do not want to hear about any 61 year old man having terminal prostate cancer. The reason is today I received my blood test report on the status of my prostate cancer surgery a year ago as well. I was clean six months ago and happy to report I am clean today. Rehab from last month's back surgery is going well. I hope to be doing numerous road trips next year.

Guys, I would tell you, it's not pleasant getting checked for cancer, but you don't want to be 61 like Andy and be terminal. If you're that age and have not been checked, make an appointment tomorrow. I felt fine, too.

The only Andy Taylor we’d typically be talking about in Forgotten Hits would have been the Sheriff of Mayberry … but I think the revealing news about Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor hit everybody hard after the announcement came this weekend at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Several years ago, my ex-boss was diagnosed with colon cancer and given a very short time to live.  Like you said, it came out of nowhere … completely unexpected. (In hindsight, he said there were signs that should have made him curious … but he just chose to ignore them.)  He was gone before anyone expected him to be … but the minute he was diagnosed, he called together all of his key people and insisted that they go have a colonoscopy NOW … just go in and get it done ... period.

I think I was about to turn fifty at the time … and as you said, it is NOT a pleasant experience … if I’m being totally honest, I think the “prep” the night before is worse than the actual procedure itself!!!  Hell, if I’m going to go thru THAT much tummy trauma, I’d rather just go eat half a dozen White Castle burgers … the end (pun intended) result is virtually the same.

(A piece of advice in this regard …

Just sit right on the toilet while you eat them and save yourself a step or two!!!)

That was almost twenty years ago already and the technology has come a long way since then with home Cologuard kits (or, as I like to call them, “Shit on a Stick”) which you can administer in the privacy of your own bathroom … and then mail in the results for a 95+% accurate result.  Still, with each passing year, it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Good advice on every level.  (kk)
