With all these Beatles anniversaries of late, we once again find ourselves falling a bit behind in Oldies News ... so you may find some of today's postings to be a bit more than a few days late. (Speaking of Beatles news, we had so many more new comments on this front that we've moved that batch into tomorrow's Valentine's Day post, which also features a cool track sent into us by Paul Evans, who wrote the #1 Hit "Roses Are Red" (so knows a thing or two about love songs!)

Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, The Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool and the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, Ozzy Osborne, Sade and A Tribe Called Quest
(That’s quite an eclectic list … and quite a few
nominees!!!)
Some make sense … Mariah Carey’s a given, Cher is deserving for sure, Ozzy
without question … and I guess I can justify Mary J. Blige, Peter Frampton and
Foreigner … and even Oasis … The Dave Matthews Band surprises me but they do
have an enormous following …
But a few of these raise an eyebrow (Kool and the Gang? Lenny Kravitz? Sinead O’Connor? Sade? Jane’s Addiction? A Tribe Called Quest? WHY?!?!?)
And Eric B. & Rakim is a flat out head-scratcher. (WHO!?!?!?!?!?)
While I’m not quite sure how excited Cher is to finally be on the ballot ... didn’t we just run a story about a month ago or so where she blasted the Rock Hall by saying "You know what, I wouldn't be in it now if they gave me a million dollars. I'm not kidding you, I was about to say I'm not shitting you. I'm never changing my mind. They can just go you-know-what-themselves" ... with her varied career, she certainly is most deserving of such an honor. (Think about all the different Chers we’ve encountered over the years … everything from Hippie Chick Cher to Glitzy Las Vegas Cher to Television Star Cher to I Don’t Care Cher to Movie Star Cher to Mamma Mia Cher.) Incredibly, Cher never made our Deserving and Denied List. And then she finally blasts The Rock Hall for ignoring her for all these years and gets nominated immediately! You just know that somewhere in the back of her mind, she’s just gotta be thinking “Why didn’t I speak up sooner?!?!” Ahh, but then we wouldn’t get all the drama that is sure to ensue!
I’m sure if she could turn back time, she probably would do so … and I BELIEVE that she’ll probably accept the nomination graciously (with plenty of jabs and digs along the way.) Although I’m sure that when she was first notified, her immediate reaction was “You Better Sit Down, Kids” … ‘cause Mama just got nominated! (Proving, of course, that the beat really DOES go on!) Dang! Dang! All we really want to do is see you take home that award … ‘cause when it comes to support, we’ve got you, babe!” (I’m not really sure who I’d cast my OTHER four votes for in the Fan Vote right now … but as far as most deserving, I’d have to make Cher one of them.) kk

While Foreigner certainly gets my vote (word is they were black-listed by Jann Wenner for decades ... but now with Jann out of the picture, they finally earned their rightful nomination), Ultimate Classic Rock brings up a good point ...
If Foreigner gets inducted and their regular touring lineup performs at the ceremony, then zero of the members onstage will actually enter the Rock Hall's Class of 2024.
The members of Foreigner included in the nomination includes their classic-era members Dennis Elliott, Ed Gagliardi, Lou Gramm, Al Greenwood, Mick Jones, Ian McDonald and Rick Wills. Of those seven members, only Jones remains in the band's current lineup ... but he has taken on a largely behind-the-scenes role in recent years due to health issues have prohibited him from touring regularly. (Rumored reunions including Gramm and Jones have yet to materialize ... although much was made of the band recently celebrating their 40th ... and then 45th anniversaries.
It is hoped that such an honor might spur several of the original members to reunite at the ceremony ... and perform that night as well, even if augmented by the current line-up of the band, some of whom have now been part of Foreigner's history longer than the original bunch!
Only time will tell ... they've got to win induction first ... but I rank them right up there amongst the most deserving candidates as well. (kk)

Liam Gallagher, when told of Oasis' nomination to The Rock Hall expressed his thoughts with a simple "Fuck You, Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame." (Don't sugar-coat it, Liam ... tell us how you REALLY feel!!!)
But the BEST comment had to come from Peter Frampton who simply said, "Wait a minute ... You mean I'm not already in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame?!?!"

John has been very supportive of our efforts … and has even offered us audio from his early days in radio out of his personal collection. In addition, Rik Anthony is providing sound bites for our use from his "Someone You Should Know" podcast, as he interviewed John this last January.
Bill Shannon and I are currently working on the program, and at this point we have more airchecks than time will allow. We plan on featuring original shows from WOIA, WILS, WIBG, WLS, CFTR, WLUP, WAGO, WPHR, and WJMK.

How cool is this?!?!
Billy Joel's 100th Concert appearance at Madison Square Garden on March 28th is being taped and will air as a CBS Television Special on April 14th!!!
That means the whole world will get a chance to see Billy perform in what has become in many ways his own personal arena. (Billy also cracked The Hot 100 for the first time since 1997 with the release of his new single, "Turn The Lights Back On" this week. Billy also disclosed that at one point he had hoped that Adele might record the track, before giving it a go on his own.)
Titled "100th: Billy Joel At Madison Square Garden - The Greatest Arena Run Of All Time" it'll act as a permanent record of this incredible career milestone. (kk)
Henry Fambrough, the last surviving original member of the popular singing group the Spinners, passed away of natural causes on February 7th, 2024. He was 85.
Henry was the deep baritone voice in the vocal group’s harmonies.
In addition to being a huge R&B act, The Spinners enjoyed 17 Top 40 Pop Hits, too, including four #1’s and two #2’s. (kk)
Also passing away last week was Mojo Nixon. He died of cardiac arrest one day after performing on The Outlaw Country Cruise. In addition to recording a number of novelty tunes, Nixon also had a radio program on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country Channel.
One of his most popular tracks, “Don Henley Must Die,” achieve true superstar recognition when, in 1992, while performing in Austin, Texas, Don jumped up onstage, join in on the chorus: “Don Henley must die, don’t let him get back together with Glenn Frey!” (kk)

From the “Everything Old Is New Again” Department, sales of Tracy Chapman’s music since The Grammy Awards aired last Sunday are up 38,400%!!! (How do you even measure something like that?!?!)
Suffice to say they’re thru the roof, primarily for “Fast Car,” which was a featured highlight of the Grammy broadcast. (Scroll back to last Thursday’s post to see Chapman perform the duet with Luke Combs, who scored a #1 Hit with his remake last year!)

And, on the topic of albums ... and Billboard Magazine ... The Grateful Dead just set a new Billboard record …
Last week, The Grateful Dead broke the record for the most top 40-charting albums in the nearly 68-year history the Billboard Top 200 Albums List.
The group’s latest release, “Dave’s Picks, Volume 49: Frost Amphitheatre, Stanford U., Palo Alto, CA (4/27/85 & 4/28/85),” debuted at No. 25 on the chart dated February 10th. It became the 59th Top 40 album for the band, pushing ahead of the 58 Top 40 LP’s earned by both Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Pretty frickin’ amazing! (kk)
Suzi Quatro will be recording a new album when she finishes up her current tour … and wants Alice Cooper to sing a duet with her on it!
Suzi and Alice go way back (both are originally from Detroit) and toured together a long, long time ago.
Suzi told Noise 11 about the time she broke Alice Cooper’s nose!
“Don’t forgot I broke his nose. We were on that Welcome To My Nightmare tour. It was like 80 shows. We had done 40 before that by ourselves up in Canada non-stop. Of course, you go a little bit crazy. We decided to have a rubber dart gun fight in the hotel. We even had the mattresses out in the hallway and it was getting really tactical, hiding and shooting and hiding and shooting. Alice was hiding behind a television set. He has a rather large nose. He stuck his nose out to see where I was and ‘boink!’ He had a shiner and he went on stage that night with a Suzi Quatro t-shirt out of respect.”

If by chance you still haven’t seen the Taylor Swift Eras Tour movie (it’s streaming now for $19.95 after a very successful run in theaters), you’ll get your chance to see the film for FREE (well, if you’re a Disney+ subscriber that is, which’ll still run you about $12-$15 a month depending on what type of plan you have!) when Disney+ airs the film beginning on March 15th with additional footage and performances. Sadly, the week before this year’s anniversary, Hank Cicalo, the engineer who worked the board for that album under the direction of producer Lou Adler, passed away.

The 1971 legendary “Tapestry” album from singer/songwriter and pianist Carole King, produced by Ode Records label owner Lou Adler, with engineer Hank Cicalo at the board in California at A&M Studios in Hollywood, spent 15 weeks at #1, garnered four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance (Female) Record of the Year, “It’s Too Late;” and Song of the Year “You’ve Got a Friend.” Producer Quincy Jones was a 1972 Grammy recipient for an arrangement on his own LP of King’s “Smackwater Jack.” The album resided full time on the music record charts for six years, generating over 24 million in sales worldwide, making it one of the most successful discs of all-time.
In 2008 I wrote the liner notes to the deluxe expanded edition of "Tapestry" for the Sony/Legacy/Ode Record label reissue.

“On ‘Tapestry,’ Lou and I did quite a few things. There was a thing about the middle of Carole’s voice where it’s almost warmth with a little edge. I always wanted to capture that. I thought her piano playing was great, she would sing, and she was such a writer and performer, she knew when to lay out and when to hit it. So that was always great. Then, when her vocals came when you mixed them, the spaces were always in the right places. Everything was supporting her voice and that piano. That’s where the nucleus of the whole album was.
“My thing with drums, in a record I did, Russ Kunkel on this, I always wanted to get the cymbals. Years ago, it was one microphone over the top. That kind of thing. But because of the brushes and light cymbal work, and if you listen to those records you will hear it. It’s there. The hi-hat was very important top these records or any of these records. That’s how you sub divide the bar. Musicians don’t listen to that, but they feel it. So to me, it was always important people could hear what was in the phones.
“Lou was the kind of guy, as a producer, first of all he had an incredible feeling for songs. He could listen to a tune and go ‘that’s not it … let’s go on to the next one.’ And the way he would work it was amazing. We were mixing the album, I had some other projects going, but about the second week of mixing, we re-mixed some things, I wanted to mix some things, Lou wanted to mix some things and one night we came down, pretty much finished it, said ‘Let’s listen to it from the top in one of the editing rooms in the back at A&M.’ Third room. We listened to the album late at night. Played the whole thing down. The second engineer was there. Lights low, and I said to myself, ‘This sounds great!’ I don’t mean great engineering. I mean the tunes. It started hitting. I turned around to Lou, we walked out, went to the hallway, and I told Lou, ‘Something is goin’ on here.’ ‘Yea … It’s pretty good … ’ That was the first time we really struck on it. All these things, but when we sat down and listened to it then we realized it was something better than normal. A great record coming. And that’s when I felt it and I think that’s when he felt it that night.
“The studio had a Howard Holzer special made console. His board you could really punch it. The only thing I had to worry about was tape … there was no noise reduction in those days ... It’s so much easier now. Everything was supporting that voice and that piano. That’s where the nucleus of the whole album was. No matter what happened in that room, it had to support it. You got to remember that whole period, everything was moving from two track tapes. I met Carole when she wrote songs for the Monkees, whom I did four or five albums with. The writer becoming the recording artist or star seemed to be a natural path for people performing as side people. And then they made an album suddenly becoming a star or an artist or performer. And see them grow, but we were all growing the producers, the record companies. The progression was natural.
“In 1967 I went to Lou’s Monterey International Pop Festival with a couple of the Monkees. That was exciting, I had a couple of Nehru jackets before denim. I worked with the Holy Modul Rounders and did an album with them. I did an album with Richard Perry, ‘As Safe As Milk.’ I loved Captain Beefheart.
"I later recorded George Harrison and worked with him and his Dark Horse label. I went to England for “33 1/3.” Wonderful man. Sweet, big hearted, charming. We added a little EQ in his voice, as he would need more in the middle. He was always well prepared for sessions. He could change on a dime. If the musicians were feeling something one way and he wanted it to go one way, he would go with them, if he liked it he’s stay there. Wait. Let’s stop. He was very conscious of what was going on, but he could flow in a room really well. He really knew what was going on. A likable guy, God, he was such a sweet man … Wonderful man. I stayed at his house. He had a studio. I went with Tom Scott. Andy Newmark and Wilie Weeks and were there for a month. I did a lot of the album.”

HENRY “HANK” CICALO - June 25, 1932 – January 31, 2024
On Wednesday, January 31, Hank passed away at home, peacefully, in his sleep, surrounded by his loving family. He was 91 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, Hank graduated from Lafayette High School. He served for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Korean War, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. He attended Audio Visual Technical School in New York City.
Shortly after graduating, he moved to California to begin his illustrious career as a recording engineer — first working with Armed Forces Radio, then Capitol Records, RCA, Dot, A&M Records and more. He had the pleasure of working with almost every great artist of his time – from the 50’s through the 80’s: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Lou Rawls, Duke Ellington, The Monkees, George Harrison, Tom Scott, Michael Feinstein and Barbra Streisand, to name a few.
One of his most acclaimed projects was Carole King’s Tapestry album, with producer Lou Adler.
In addition to working with them on several subsequent projects, he also enjoyed recording many other artists on Ode Records. He met his wife, Lynn Cherry Cicalo, working on The Blade Runner soundtrack in 1982 and they married in 1988. They were fortunate to share many happy years together.
Hank is survived by his wife Lynn, his former wife Norma and their children: Joe (Shari), Christine, Victoria (Gene) and his grandchildren Joe (32) and Elena (16).
A memorial service will be planned for a future time.
Because of Hank’s service in the Korean War, he was a passionate advocate for the caring service provided by the USO. Contributions can be made to the USO.
I first learned Hank Cicalo’s name when I saw it on The Monkees’ “Headquarters” album back in 1966 … which means that Hank was involved with two of my favorite albums of all time: “Headquarters” and “Tapestry.”
His work was well recognized in the industry and he built a fine legacy for himself.

One that’s been getting quite a bit of buzz is the use of Neil Diamond’s 1971 #4 Hit “I Am, I Said,” which is being used to announce Volkswagen’s first electric car.

Thankfully, we three know that Henry VIII is married to the widow next door. And now Carl Giammarese, Dennis Tufano and I can share a giggle every time I see/hear them sing that song that is now MINE!

For the record, “Don’t You Care” just happens to be one of my favorite Buckinghams songs (right behind “Susan” on my all-time favorites list) …
And I give total props to Carl Giammarese for completely reinventing the song a couple of years back when he cut a new ballad duet with Lisa McClowry …
