THE SATURDAY SURVEY

Only TWO British Acts in this week's Top Ten ...

Manfred Mann at #2 with "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," an almost certain #1 Hit ...

And Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde at #10 with "A Summer Song," up seven spots from last week's #17 position.

Roy Orbison holds down the #1 spot for the third consecutive week ... while J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers' "Last Kiss" finally cracks The Top Ten in its 7th week on the chart.

"Baby Love" by The Supremes makes a 35 point leap (from #69 to #34), while Dean Martin is up 25 places with the follow up to his #1 hit "Everybody Loves Somebody," "The Door Is Still Open To My Heart."

Other British chart action includes The Animals' former #1 hit "The House of the Rising Sun" (now down to #12), as well as their new one, "I'm Crying," up 35 spots from #79 to #44, The Beatles' "Matchbox" (#20), "Slow Down" (#26) and "A Hard Day's Night (#54), The Nashville Teens, making a ten point leap to #24 with "Tobacco Road," The Honeycombs, up sixteen spots from #43 to #27 with "Have I The Right," Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas moving up a notch to #28 with their latest, "From A Window," "I Like It" by Gerry and the Pacemakers, up 12 spots to #47, Dusty Springfield not far behind at #49 with "All Cried Out" ... and it looks like The Dave Clark Five may have another smash on their hands as "Everybody Knows (I Still Love You)" shoots up 24 places to #56, passing their last hit, "Because," which now sits at #60.

Peter and Gordon make a 32 point leap to #67 with "I Don't Want To See You Again," another Lennon and McCartney tune, while The Bachelors are right behind them with "I Wouldn't Trade You For The World" at #68. The Kinks climb 21 places with "You Really Got Me" ... and there's a new British group called The Zombies debuting at #86 with their first US hit, "She's Not There."

(Speaking of new groups, the first chart hit for Herman's Hermits, "I'm Into Something Good," is bubbling under this week at #103.  You'll also find the latest from The Searchers, "When You Walk In The Room," at #105.)

October 4th, 1964

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

10/4/64 – The St. Louis Cardinals clinch the National League pennant on the last day of the season by beating The New York Mets by a score of 11 to 5.

This, in combination with The Cincinnati Reds’ 10-0 loss to The Philadelphia Phillies, pushed The Cardinals one game ahead to take the pennant.

(Had both teams won today, a one-off playoff game would have been played between The Cardinals and The Reds.)

10/4/64 – 10/7/64 - Hurricane Hilda kills 38 in Louisianna, Mississippi and Georgia

And just a friendly reminder to be sure to tune in tomorrow night to hear Phil Nee count down

YOUR TOP 40 ALL-TIME FAVORITE BUBBLEGUM SONGS!!!

https://wrco.com/

Phil tells me that he'll be counting down your Top 40 Favorites between 6 and 9 pm (central time) ...  but stick around for the whole show (he's on till Midnight) to hear more great oldies all night long!

October 3rd, 1964

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

10/3/64 – The New York Yankees clinch The American League pennant for the 29th time in 64 seasons after beating the Cleveland Indians by a final score of 8 to 3, thus putting them two games ahead of the Chicago White Sox, with only one game left to play in the season.  When the season ended the very next day, the Yankees had a 99–63 won–loss record, the White Sox were 98-64 and the Baltimore Orioles were 97–65 ... a GREAT year for baseball if you were growing up in Chicago (heartbreaking as it may have been!)

Incredibly, with only one game left to play this season, The Yankees still don’t know who they’ll be facing in The World Series as, with a game to go, both The St. Louis Cardinals and The Cincinnati Reds are tied for first place in The National League with identical records of 92-69.  (These were unquestionably two of the tightest pennant races in Major League Baseball history … and made for an incredibly exciting season of baseball!)

Also on 10/3, the animated television series “Underdog” debuts on NBC.

Also on 10/3, British Actor Clive Owen is born

What's Up, Wednesday?

Sammy gave us a double-dose of his Forgotten Hits / Super Charts show this week ...

Part One featured many of the easy listening tunes that were crossing over to the national pop charts ...

And Part Two featured more of the "traditional" fare, including a bunch of songs you likely haven't heard since forever ... and some, maybe never before at all!

https://www.mixcloud.com/LAFOS/

And his LAFOS show is always a fun listen, too.  (You'll find them all at the link above.)

This past week he featured an hour of uncharted hits, including THIS one by Nancy Ames, which I never would have even KNOWN about were it not for Sammy's eclectic tastes!  (Nancy Ames?!?!  She was the "That Was The Week That Was" girl who showed up on any number of variety shows back in the day, never really carving out her own niche as a recording artist.  The closest she ever came to an actual hit happened in 1966 with a record called "He Wore a Green Beret," which peaked at #89 (in Billboard only.)

But I have to admit that I kinda like her English "Pow! Pow! Pow!" version of the Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 classic "Mas Que Nada."  (This song was perhaps a little too unique for its time, peaking at only #47 for its originator.  Today, EVERYBODY knows this tune!!!)  kk

I had hoped to be the first to share with you some brand new music from Burton Cummings’ upcoming new album, his first of new material in over twelve years …

But we were beaten to the punch on this one.

No biggie … I’m a good sport … and for me, it’s the music that ALWAYS comes first …

So take a few minutes to sample some of Burton’s latest and greatest, here:

https://bestclassicbands.com/burton-cummings-2024-2025-60th-anniversary-greatest-hits-tour-studio-album-9-27-24/

And go out and see him during his “60th Anniversary Hits” Tour if you get the chance!

From Burton himself:

“Get ready, America! This fall, my band and I are hitting the road for the first leg of our U.S. tour! It’s been far too long, but we’re finally bringing the music straight to your doorstep. Join us at a venue near you, where we’ll be performing my hits from the original The Guess Who and my solo career from over the past 60 years!”

THIS JUST IN ...

Be listening on Sunday (10/6) when Micky Dolenz calls into Chris Carter's Breakfast With The Beatles Program.  And Carter will intro Dolenz at his upcoming L.A. date on Saturday, October 12th, at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills.

Hi, Kent -

Have you seen this?  It is beyond description …

Dire Straits' live performance of "Sultans of Swing" recorded at The Hammersmith Odeon in London, recorded in 1983.

I just discovered it, by accident.

I have NEVER witnessed a performance like this one. I could watch it ten times a day and never tire of it.

It's racked up a quarter of a billion views, which does not surprise me in the least. Rock perfection.

The drummer is in a class by himself.

Enjoy!
