January 21st, 1965

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

1/21/65 – The Byrds record Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tamborine Man”

Unbeknownst to the band at the time, Roger McGuinn (then known as Jim) would be the only Byrd playing on the session.

Producer Terry Melcher had hired The Wrecking Crew for the group's first recording date ... but needed Roger's prowess on 12-string guitar to achieve the sound that interested Columbia in the band in the first place.

McGuinn had already proved his guitar magic with The Chad Mitchell Trio ... and was then picked up as part of Bobby Darin's back-up band.  Once Bob Dylan hit the scene, McGuinn knew where his true calling was ... and The Byrds were born.

Also on 1/21, The Animals are forced to cancel a show at New York's Apollo Theatre after the US Immigration Department forced the group to leave the venue. Their only New York appearance would be on “The Ed Sullivan Show” three days later.
