The Beatles finally reach the #1 spot this week as "Ticket To Ride" replaces "Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter" at the top of the chart. Herman's Hermits hold on to the #5 spot with "Silhouettes," which appears to be their peak with this one. Meanwhile, "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat" finally falls off the chart, only to be replaced by their latest, "Wonderful World," another remake, this time of the old Sam Cooke tune.
Speaking of Sam Cooke, check out the latest by The Animals ...
It's THEIR cover of Sam's "Bring It On Home To Me," which leaps from # 90 to #52 this week! (Cooke was gunned down in December of last year in a hotel lobby in Los Angeles under questionable circumstances.) Peter Noone told us that their Producer Mickie Most brought The Animals and The Hermits in to record special tributes to the great singer / songwriter.
Looking back at The Top Ten, we see The Beach Boys are up three places to #3 with their latest, "Help Me Rhonda." The Supremes continue their climb toward the top as "Back In My Arms Again" jumps up seven spots from #14 to #7. "Wooly Bully" also continues to climb, moving this week from #11 to #8 ... while Elvis Presley's "Crying In The Chapel" climbs from #16 to #9.
The Top 20 sees big moves for The Dave Clark Five (#22 to #16 for "Reelin' And Rockin'"), The Beau Brummels and "Just A Little" (#27 to #17), "True Love Ways" by Peter and Gordon (#29 to #19) and "Engine Engine #9" for Roger Miller, which vaults up 24 places from #44 to #20.
That's NOTHING compared to The Four Tops' "I Can't Help Myself," which is up 43 places from #82 to #39. There are a couple of versions of "Concrete and Clay" working their way up the chart ... Unit 4 + 2 has the current edge with their version ... it climbs from #58 to #46, a move of a dozen places ... while Eddie Rambeau's version moves from #65 to #49, a bigger move ... but to a lower position.
The Guess Who are up a dozen spots with their first US chart hit, "Shakin' All Over." It climbs from #60 to #48. And keep an eye on The Yardbirds, another British act, who move from #80 to #59 with their first US hit.
"Mr. Tambourine Man" continues to climb, moving this week from #81 to #63 for The Byrds. And a novelty record that I always liked premiers at #81 this week for Dickey Lee. His latest is called "Laurie" ... and it's a strange one!!!
