Remembering BOBBY SHERMAN ... TEEN IDOL

BOBBY SHERMAN … TEEN IDOL

Back in 2004, in our pre-website FORGOTTEN HITS Newsletter, we ran a series on TEEN IDOLS, as selected by our readers.

Naturally, BOBBY SHERMAN made the list.

In fact, he kicked off '70's TEEN IDOLS WEEK

Here is that piece, in its entirety, exactly as it appeared back in 2004 ...

‘60’s FLASHBACK

BOBBY SHERMAN had a pretty good run at pop idol stardom ... and he STILL drives them crazy in concert. At best, he had marginal talent ... his singing voice certainly wasn't anything to write home about … and his acting left more than a little to be desired. But somehow the whole package worked and BOBBY's pictures were plastered all over every square inch of teenage girls' bedrooms around the globe.

BOBBY was making the pages of 16 MAGAZINE four years before he even scored his first chart hit ... as the host of TV's SHINDIG, the editors immediately saw a teen-appeal that could be exploited. Years later, between living under the bluest skies you'll ever see in Seattle (on HERE COME THE BRIDES) to running up a string of hits like LITTLE WOMAN (#1, 1969), LA LA LA (IF I HAD YOU), #8, 1970, EASY COME, EASY GO (#5, 1970), HEY MISTER SUN (#22, 1970), and CRIED LIKE A BABY (#10, 1971), BOBBY rocked our teenage world. (He even scored a goofy TV spin-off series years later thanks to an appearance on THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY!)

Having seen him recently as part of THE TEEN IDOLS TOUR, I can attest first hand that he is STILL driving them crazy. (Frannie even got a kiss at the Navy Pier show!) He looks great and even sounds better than I remember him sounding.

My personal favorite BOBBY SHERMAN tune has got to be JULIE DO YA LOVE ME, a #1 smash from 1970. We'll kick off '70's TEEN IDOL WEEK with this one!

From FH Readers Suzanne and Debi:

Oh my god, Kent!!!  When I read your email, I blushed!!  How funny!
My big heartthrobs were Donny Osmond & Bobby Sherman.  Donny was cute and I thought he had an incredible voice.  He was the same age as me, so that added to the attraction.  I would buy "16", "Spec" and "TigerBeat" magazines at the 7-11 on my way home from school.  Then I would hide them in my book bag so I wouldn't be ridiculed by my sucky brothers.  I never would put up posters because my brothers would rag on me.  I read every article about Donny.  When I read that he was Mormon, I had to find out what that was.  I might have converted!!  LOL  When he would sing "Too Young",  I felt like he was singing to me.  ::melt::

Now Bobby .... oh man, what a babe!!! Since I was a musician since I was 8, I knew he didn't have much of a singing voice ... but, oh man, oh man ... he was sooooooooo cute!!! Knee weakening cute.

I never missed an episode of Here Come the Brides. ::sigh:: I had read that he's now a paramedic. How I would love him to do CPR on me!

It's a funny thing, bringing back memories of early sexual stirrings. Two songs come to mind ... Stay Awhile by the Bells and Go All The Way by the Raspberries. Boy, did those songs have me thinking thoughts! :-)
Suzanne

My first "teen idol" love came into my life the very first time I saw him in the first

episode of "Here Come The Brides" in 1968. Jeremy Bolt aka Bobby Sherman!

Unfortunately, shortly after that show aired, we were transferred (courtesy of the U.S. Air Force) to Okinawa where I learned we only had one TV channel. I was horrified thinking that I wouldn't be able to watch my beloved ever again (and at the age of 12, that's very tragic).

Much to my surprise, we actually got "Here Come The Brides" over there, and even more of a surprise we got it three or four times a day, same episode, but who cared!

I had never seen Shindig, but learned soon enough that my love made albums, too, and his voice just bowled me over. When "Julie Do You Love Me" was released, it was very simply changed to "Debi, Do You Love Me."  I knew that he was living in the San Fernando Valley and whenever we visited my grandparents, I always made my cousin drive me around looking for him.

It took a little over 30 years, but I finally got the chance to see and meet him in person a couple of years ago at a charity bowling function. I was in such awe and stunned at how wonderful he looked and how friendly he was that I was absolutely speechless and could barely get any words out. But he did shake my hand and said how nice it was to meet such a longtime fan. Something I'll never forget!

Here are a couple of pics that I gathered for your presentation.

Thanks for letting me relive some VERY precious memories!

Here is a clip from the year 2000 with Bobby and me on WRCO.

>>>I think our friend Kristy/C-Gals, who we met there for the show, may have gotten kisses from both Bobby and her teen idol heart-throb, Micky Dolenz.
I didn't! I would have been impossible to live with if I had! I'd be actively talking about it today if I had. My life would have been consumed with it. Move over, Marcia Brady's cheek!!
Kristy
Actually, I think that day as we were walking over to meet them all, you said, "All I wanna do is lick Micky's cheek!"  lol  (kk)

Probably NOT what Louisa May Alcott had in mind ...

A beautiful, heartfelt message from his wife Brigitte and his friend, John Stamos, after the passing of Bobby Sherman …

From one ex teen idol, to another – rest in peace Bobby Sherman.

This is from his wife, my friend, Brigitte:

“It is with the heaviest heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Bobby Sherman.

Bobby left this world holding my hand — just as he held up our life with love, courage, and unwavering grace through all 29 beautiful years of marriage. I was his Cinderella, and he was my prince charming. Even in his final days, he stayed strong for me. That’s who Bobby was — brave, gentle, and full of light.

As he rested, I read him fan letters from all over the world — words of love and gratitude that lifted his spirits and reminded him of how deeply he was cherished. He soaked up every word with that familiar sparkle in his eye. And yes, he still found time to crack well-timed jokes — Bobby had a wonderful, wicked sense of humor. It never left him. He could light up a room with a look, a quip, or one of his classic, one-liners.

Known around the world for his music and acting, he brought joy to millions through songs like “Julie, Do Ya Love Me,” “Easy Come, Easy Go,” and “Little Woman,” and through his beloved role in Here Come the Brides.

But to those who truly knew him, Bobby was something much more. He was a man of service. He traded sold-out concerts and magazine covers for the back of an ambulance, becoming an EMT and a trainer with the LAPD. He saved lives. He showed us what real heroism looks like — quiet, selfless, and deeply human.

Bobby is survived by his two sons, Tyler and Christopher, and six beautiful grandchildren.

He lived with integrity, gave without hesitation, and loved with his whole heart. And though our family feels his loss profoundly, we also feel the warmth of his legacy — his voice, his laughter, his music, his mission.

Thank you to every fan who ever sang along, who ever wrote a letter, who ever sent love his way. He felt it.

Rest gently, my love.

With gratitude and love,
Brigitte Poublon Sherman.”

Bobby’s wife first went public back in March about her husband’s condition ... (Bobby had Stage 4 Cancer) … with this posting …

“It is with a heavy heart that we share Bobby has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 cance.  During this challenging time, we kindly ask for your understanding and respect for our privacy. Thank you so much for still remembering him. We really appreciate it.  As many of you know, Bobby has been retired for some time and is no longer able to participate in cameos, sign autographs, or make appearances.  In another post issued a week later, Brigitte referred to her husband as being “terminally ill” … so this day was sadly inevitable.

From Maureen McCormick, who appeared with Bobby on an episode of her “Brady Bunch” series:

Rest In Peace Bobby Sherman.  I will always remember your kindness … what a beautiful human being. My deepest condolences to his family.

And then this from Donny Osmond …

There have been many teen idols throughout my life, but the first one I remember seeing was Bobby Sherman. I was just a young boy when I spotted him on the cover of Tiger Beat magazine. In many ways, the world of teen idols began with Frank Sinatra in the ’40s, Elvis Presley in the ’50s, and then Bobby Sherman in the ’60s. Little did I know that one day, I’d share those very same magazine covers with Bobby. Thank you, Bobby, for introducing me to that world. May you rest in peace.

Sincerely, Donny Osmond
