60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

8/13/65 – The Beatles arrive at Kennedy International Airport in New York to begin their second North American Tour

Also on 8/13, Mike Smith, lead singer of The Dave Clark Five, suffered two broken ribs when he was pulled off the stage by overzealous fans. The group was performing at the Arie Crown Theater in McCormick Place in Chicago, and this was their first concert, kicking off a brand new US tour.

Also on 8/13, Jefferson Airplane made their live debut at the grand opening of San Francisco's Matrix Club. The photograph of the members of Jefferson Airplane that was featured on the front cover of their best-known album, Surrealistic Pillow (1967), was taken inside the Matrix.
