The Chuck Buell Forgotten Hits Take-Over Continues ...

Chuck Buell Continues on a Theme ...

After my recent "Three Credit Cards in the Fountain" lyrical parody, a lifelong friend of mine and I were talking about the old 1954 Forgotten Hit that inspired it, "Three Coins in the Fountain," and remembering the other Top Ten Hits of 1954.  While we could remember all the Top Ten for that year except for one … neither one of us could place Jo Stafford's "Make Love to Me!"

So, we went to listen to it. Here it is for your reference.

Well, the whole song was nothing but a Big Bowl of Mush to us 10 year old boys then! Holey McBuckets! No wonder we don't remember it! It was also considered highly controversial and questionable at the time, as its suggestive lyrics were deemed very risqué for 1954.

Fast forward six years later to 1960 when I was in High School and was doing my Radio Show each weeknight. One weekly feature was "Make It Or Break It," the kind of thing where I'd play a few select new records during one half hour segment and have a panel of three or four of my local high school's students comment on each one and vote on its "Hitability!"

I'll never forget one record I played ( which was kind of a conceptual update on the blatant theme of Stafford's "Make Love to Me," I think ) that also succeeded in being considered highly questionable and risqué for the time. In fact, the song was banned or restricted by many radio stations but funnily enough, I got away with playing it during its short, low-charting life where it peaked at only Number 86 on Billboard's Top 100.  Anyway, one "Make It Or Break It" panel guy said, very straightforwardly, "It sounds like a record to Make Out to!"  Gasp!  Remember, this was the conservative late 1950s-lingering into the early 1960s that had not yet given way to the "Swingin' 60s!"

I thought it might be fun to also include that one here so you can rank and rate it too!

CB ( which stands for "Controversial Boy!" )

OK, both of these were just a little before my time ...

But for the ultra-conservative early 1950's, these are a couple of pretty hot looking women!

Damn!  You could almost stick these two on Gilligan's Island!!! (kk)
