THE SATURDAY SURVEY / 60 YEARS AGO TODAY: February 28th, 1966

"The Ballad Of The Green Beret" unseats Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" after only one week, claiming the #1 spot.  (All Top Three Records this week are former #1 Records.)

And right behind them are two excellent candidates to someday occupy that position ...

Herman's Hermits continue to climb with "Listen People," now up to #4 in only its fourth week on the chart ...

Followed by The Mamas and the Papas, a new folk act out of  California, with their breakthrough hit, "California Dreamin'."

Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly" and "I Fought The Law" by The Bobby Fuller Four are Top Ten debuts this week as well.

The Rolling Stones are up 25 places with "19th Nervous Breakdown" (#38 to #13), while The Beatles are back with the top debut of the week as "Nowhere Man" bows at #30.

It would appear that The Lovin' Spoonful have a sure-fire hit with "Daydream" ... it climbs 42 notches to #40 this week ...

And "One More Heartache" by Marvin Gaye, "Magic Town" by The Vogues, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by B.J. Thomas, "Get Ready" by The Temptations and "Time Won't Let Me" by The Outsiders all makes moves of twenty places or more.

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

2/28/66 – The Cavern Club, home to The Beatles for SO many performances during the early years, closes its doors.  (About one hundred fans barricaded themselves inside, trying to prevent police for bolting the doors.)
