60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
5/31/66 – Today is
the first day of filming for a brand new NBC musical comedy series called “The Monkees,” based loosely on The Beatles’ movie “A
Hard Day’s Night.” It stars Davy Jones,
Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork.
Over the next two years, The Monkees will become the top-selling group in the country, at one point outselling The Beatles and The Rolling Stones combined.
Also on 5/31 – Filming begins on the movie “To Sir, With Love,” starring Sidney Poitier and introducing pop singer Lulu. Her version of the title song to this movie will top the charts next year.
