The Saturday Survey

The Mamas and the Papas and The Young Rascals hold on to the #1 and #2 positions this week as Bob Dylan moves into the #3 slot.  "Sloop John B" and "Kicks" round out The Top Five while The Shadows Of Knight, Percy Sledge, Nancy Sinatra and Dionne Warwick all continue to climb The Top Ten.

The Lovin' Spoonful and Simon and Garfunkel make big upward strides with their latest singles, "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind" and "I Am A Rock."  James Brown and Sam and Dave seem to be sure-fire soul shots as "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" and "Hold On! I'm Comin'" climb eleven and seventeen spots respectively.

Gary Lewis and the Playboys and The Rolling Stones have the top two debuts with "Green Grass" and "Paint It Black."

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

5/9/66 – A young Karen Carpenter signs her first recording contract with Magic Lamp Records.  (She had just turned sixteen a few weeks before.)

Only one single was released by Karen Carpenter:  "Looking For Love" / "I'll Be Yours," with only 500 copies being pressed. The record label folded in 1967 and the single remains a collectors’ item.

Also on 5/9, The Doors played at the Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, California.  The gig was actually an audition for the position of the venue's house band.
