The Beatles log their third week at #1 with "Paperback Writer" while "Hanky Panky" slides up right behind it for Tommy James and the Shondells, their first chart hit. The Cyrkle hold at #3 and Ol' Blue Eyes slips to #4 with Dusty Springfield rounding out The Top Five with her latest, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me."
The biggest Top Ten movers are all Garage Band Classics ('60's grunge, if you will) ... "Little Girl," "Dirty Water" and "Wild Thing" (up thirty points!) continue to rise and keep music edgy and exciting, circa 1966.
Taking on a little bit different tone are The Association (even if they are singing about the dreaded weed in a "Puff The Magic Dragon" sort of way) ... "Along Comes Mary is up seven notches to #12. "Li'l Red Riding Hood" climbs 22 spots to #14.
Paul Revere and the Raiders just may have their biggest hit yet as "Hungry" jumps from #43 to #18, a move of 25 notches. And The Mamas and the Papas make a king-sized leap (from #56 to #20) with their latest, "I Saw Her Again," in only its second week on the chart.
Our Forgotten Hits Buddy Tommy Roe moves up 12 spots with his comeback hit, "Sweet Pea" ... and Elvis cracks The Top 40 with his remake of the old Ketty Lester tune, "Love Letters."
The Rolling Stones are back ... their latest, "Mother's Little Helper," is this week's top debut ... it bows at #58.
60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
7/4/66 – The Beatles unintentionally snub Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos by failing to show up at a palace reception that she had arranged. As a result, all of their security police protection is pulled by her husband, at which point an angry mob attacks The Fab Four as they try to leave the country … without payment for their performances there. (If the decision to stop touring hadn’t been officially and unanimously been made by the group before, it was etched in stone today.)
