August 17th, 1966

60 YEARS AGO TODAY:

8/17/66 – The Hollies record “Stop Stop Stop”

Also on 8/17, Willie Mays moves into second place on the all-time homers list behind Babe Ruth after hitting his 535th major league home run to pass Jimmie Foxx.  The home run was his 30th of the season and it came off of Pitcher Ray Washburn of the St. Louis Cardinals at home in Candlestick Park.  (For the record, Hank Aaron had 431career home runs on this date, better than a hundred behind The Say Hey Kid.)

Mays would eventually retire from baseball in 1973 with a career total of 660 home runs … meaning he still had a little ways to go.  Over the next seven years, Mays would slug 125 more homers.  (Aaron would finally pass him on June 10th, 1972.  Aaron would finish the 1973 season with a total of 713 ... one behind Babe Ruth's soon-to-be broken record.)

At this moment, BOTH sluggers have 648 career home runs ... amazing.  (kk)
