"Cherish" holds on to the #1 position and "You Can't Hurry Love" also holds at #2. Beyond that, you've got four bulleted contenders: "Black Is Black," "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep," "Reach Out, I'll Be There" and "96 Tears." (That gives Motown three of the top five positions on the chart. You'll find more music from The Motor City at numbers 20, 22, 68 and 86.)
The Monkees, Count Five, Eric Burdon and the Animals and Dusty Springfield continue to be the big movers in The Top 40 ... but in the lower half of the chart we see big movement by Bobby Darin ("If I Were A Carpenter," up 35 spots from #93 to #58) and The Byrds ("Mr. Spaceman" jumps 20 notches to #59) ... as well as new debuts by Sam The Sham and the Pharaohs, The Happenings, Sonny and Cher, The Young Rascals and Herman's Hermits. (Herman's Hermits just appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" the other night to promote their new release, "Dandy.") I'm also partial to that new record by Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 ... "Mas Que Nada" doesn't sound like anything else on the chart right now ... in a Bossa Nova / "Girl From Ipanema" sort of way.
