We've got a brand new #1 Record this week as ? and the Mysterians take over the top spot with their debut hit, "96 Tears." They unseat The Four Tops and beat The Monkees to the punch!
There has been a very definite switch to the style of music this fall ... besides "96 Tears" on top, we've got Count Five continuing to climb with their first hit, "Psychotic Reaction" ... and even The Rolling Stones are exploring new territories with their latest, "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadows," which moves up six spots to the #6 position in its third week on the chart.
Meanwhile, Herman's Hermits continue their good-time rock feel with "Dandy" ... it's up eight places to the #10 spot.
And Bobby Darin seems to have a comeback hit on his hands ... "If I Were A Carpenter" climbs seven spots to #14. Other big movers within The Top 40 include The Happenings (up thirteen places with their latest, "Go Away Little Girl"), Paul Revere and the Raiders, also up thirteen spots with "The Great Airplane Strike" as is "I'm Your Puppet" by James and Bobby Purify ... it breaks into The Top 40 at #40.
But the biggest mover in The Top 40 this week belongs to Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, who climb another 22 places to #36 with their latest, "Devil With A Blue Dress On and Good Golly Miss Molly."
Outside The Top 40, The Lovin' Spoonful are up 34 places with their latest, "Rain On The Roof" ... and The Mamas and the Papas have this week's top debut with "Look Through My Window" ... it premiers at #69.
On a more serious note, how much flack do you think The Sandpipers will get for recording the ultra-controversial "Louie Louie"??? (How about none at all!!!) They've done it up as a traditional folk song.
And let's not overlook The Beach Boys' latest, "Good Vibrations" ... it's new at #73.
