HENRY DILTZ's JOURNAL: February, 1969 - Shooting Crosby, Stills and Nash

This next installment comes from a very special time in music ...

The formation of one of rock's greatest Super Groups ...

The coming together of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash who, by 1969, had already put together an incredible volume of work thru their individual efforts with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and The Hollies.

From Gary Strobl ...

February 13, 1969 is when Henry took shots of CSN all day and night ...

and one frame from that session became the cover.

February 17, 1969 is the photo session that became the inside cover of CSN.

It would be nearly six months before the world heard their first offering ...

Their first single, "Marrakesh Express," premiered on the charts in July, eventually peaking at #17 in Record World and #19 in Cash Box (yet, inexplicably, only at #28 in Billboard)

Next came their remarkable performance at Woodstock in August, immortalized on film by Stephen Stills with the words "This is only our second gig ... we're scared shitless!"

And then in October, their masterpiece, "Suite Judy Blue Eyes," a #15 Cash Box Hit (#21 in Billboard)

It was an incredible, whirlwind journey that all began thru introductions at Mama Cass's house the summer before when the trio blew themselves away by how well they sounded harmonizing together ... and it has been a roller coaster ride ever since.  (Neil Young has come and gone a few times along the way ... and actually performed with the band at Woodstock.)

Photographer Henry Diltz was there at the beginning to capture these shots running EXCLUSIVELY in Forgotten Hits as part of our brand new 2022 feature HENRY DILTZ's JOURNAL.  Enjoy!  (kk)
