Also on 1/1, Top Of The Pops premiers on BBC Television

Acts on the first programme include The Beatles (“I Want To Hold Your Hand”), The Rolling Stones (“I Wanna Be Your Man”), Dusty Springfield (“I Only Want To Be With You”), The Dave Clark Five (“Glad All Over”), The Swinging Blue Jeans (“Hippy Hippy Shake”) and The Hollies (“Stay”).  All of these acts would go on to figure in The British Invasion here in America later this year.

The show was broadcast from an old church hall in Manchester, England.  Also featured on this evening’s show are Freddie & the Dreamers, Cliff Richard and the Shadows and Gene Pitney.

(Can you even imagine all of this on one show?!?!)  kk
