60 YEARS AGO TODAY:
7/29/65 – The Beatles’ second movie, “Help!,” premiers in London
Also on 7/29, a major league strikeout record is set when The Philadelphia Phillies (10) and The Pittsburgh Pirates (16) combine for a record 26 strike outs.
The Philles beat the Pirates 5-0, with Pitcher Ray Culp going the distance, allowing Pittsburgh only two hits. He struck out ten batters along the way.
The combined staff of Bob Veale (14 strikeouts), Al McBean (1) and Frank Carpin (1) struck out more batters … but allowed the Philles to score five runs on nine hits to win the ballgame.
There have been 26 combined strikeouts four times since in 9-inning games …
But this one was the first.
