From Peter Noone (regarding the recently passed very special 60th Anniversary of his interview with Elvis Presley) …
https://forgottenhits60s.blogspot.com/2025/08/august-18th-1965.html
Hello Kent –
Yes indeed -
We were on a 360 day world tour and had a day off in Honolulu
Harvey Lisberg (our manager) arranged it if we could be in Tom Moffat’s (KPOI dj) by 5 am -
Only me and Barry Whitwam showed up for the pick up.
Elvis punked us and the whole thing was recorded. He had his stunt double face down on the floor in the grass hut and me and Barry went in and because we were teenagers with Niobe chips for brains, we just stood there looking down, until ELVIS walked in with his 12 henchmen all laughing at everything he said.
We were shocked to find Elvis was funny and charming and very kind to us.
Peter Noone
Still, an AMAZING experience and opportunity for a young Peter Noone! And then Elvis tried to interview you back!!! Had to be one of the highlights of the tour! (kk)
I heard from a couple of readers that Wednesday (August 20th) was National Radio Day. (I had no idea!)
This from Frank B …
HAPPY "NATIONAL RADIO DAY"
I FORGOT TO BUY YOU A PRESENT
FRANK B.
That’s OK … even if you gave me a new transistor radio, I’d probably just stick it under my pillow so I could listen to it at night after my parents went off to bed!!! (kk)
Speaking of which …
Kent,
I laughed when I read about listening to the radio when one was trying to sleep. It brought back great memories of hiding my lime green transistor radio under my pillow, although I also used to listen to baseball radio broadcasts in addition to my favorite Top 40 hits. I always enjoyed pulling in the distant stations from around the country, being exposed to hits that they were playing that my local stations in Detroit were not. Of course, I had no idea of national charts at the time and didn't start listening to American Top 40 until the mid-1970's , which finally exposed me to how big this thing called pop music really was.
I know it baffled my parents that I was always going through the 9-volt batteries like they were potato chips — until they suggested I had to pay for them myself. Glad to know I wasn't the only one that had one ear glued to the radio putting me to sleep.
Sincerely,
Joe Cantello

You’ll need to keep your radio nearby and handy all throughout this coming Labor Day Weekend …
It’s the Fourth Annual WLS / WCFL Rewound on Rewound Radio!
While I can’t fit my whole computer under my pillow, this is a tough weekend each year because I hate to miss ANY of it!!! LOTS of great airchecks and special features from the glory days of Top 40 Chicagoland Radio.
Listen Live whenever you can here: https://rewoundradio.com/ ... it's ALL good! (kk)
And, speaking of radio, Ultimate Classic Rock ran a special article announcing the 40 most played songs on Classic Rock Radio.
Give it a once-over … is this YOUR experience?!?! While you can absolutely count on a good number of these songs to pop up daily, I certainly wouldn’t necessarily rank them in this order …
Nor would I find these to be the most-played, even in 2025. (If this really is the case, radio has accomplished its goal of catering to younger listeners who first discovered “classic rock” in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s … but for me, the very definition of Classic Rock in The ‘70’s … with a smidge of ‘60’s and ‘80’s mixed in.)
I can’t believe our list is already five years old …
But this is the way YOU guys voted for THE TOP 3333 MOST ESSENTIAL CLASSIC ROCK SONGS OF ALL TIME in 2020 …
https://classicrockessentials.blogspot.com/
[By the way, we still plan on updating this list … I don’t know if it’ll be finished before the end of the year yet or not … I kind of doubt it ... but that’s been our very flexible goal! Meanwhile, you can request a copy of the complete list as it currently stands simply by sending me an email at kk@forgottenhits.com] – kk
Speaking of Classic Rock Essentials, THESE guys placed 32 songs on the list … with twelve of them making The Top 500 …
Re-reading the message and clips regarding Roger Daltrey, I get a sense of audiences sitting in shock with their arms raised to catch him as he falls. Those are his caring fans. Then there are the others who are sitting there stating, "He better finish this show! If not, I want a refund." Doesn't sound like a fun experience to me. However, it just might increase sales from the curious and the betting community (Which concert do you think will be Daltrey's last?) I sit here feeling ... sad for him, sad for his fans. Shelley
Well, Roger made it thru opening night on the 16th as The Who opened their 2025 North American Tour in Sunrise, Florida. (I haven’t jumped into the betting pool yet … I just think it was a ridiculous thing to say right before heading out on tour. But then again, he seems to be saying a LOT of ridiculous things lately!) kk
Noise 11 is reporting that The Who are digging deep into their catalog for some of the tracks that they’re performing during their final shows, pulling out songs that they have rarely … and in some cases, never … performed live before.
On August 16th in Florida, they played “Going Mobile” from "Who’s Next" for the first time ever, with Pete Townshend’s brother Simon Townshend on lead vocals.
In Italy, back on July 20th, they performed “I’ve Had Enough” from "It’s Hard." (1982) This is the first time this track has resurfaced on stage since 2013. Meanwhile, “Love Ain’t For Keepin’” (also from "Who’s Next") returned to the set for the first time since they performed it in London in 2004. That’s gotta be a nice treat for both the fans and the band.
Here are the North American dates still to come:
August 26th – Boston, MA – Fenway Park
August 28th – Wantagh, NY – Northwell at Jones Beach Theater
August 30th – New York, NY – Madison Square Garden
September 2nd and 4th – Toronto, ON – Budweiser Stage
September 7th and 9th – Chicago, IL – United Center
September 17th and 19th – Los Angeles, CA – Hollywood Bowl
September 21st – Mountain View, CA – Shoreline Amphitheatre
September 23rd – Vancouver, BC – Rogers Arena
September 25th – Seattle, WA – Climate Pledge Arena and
September 28th – Las Vegas, NV – MGM Grand Garden Arena (which they insist will
be the tour finale … with no further reunions beyond this point)
Clarifying on the Kennedy Center Honors ...
They will be held on the 7th, but have never been live, usually because there is much that the organization has needed to edit out.
They are usually delayed until between Christmas and New Year's, when CBS expects a much greater audience.
However, given the tendency of our again-President to change everything in his favor, no matter the damage to Americans' psyche, wallets, etc., they could be live.
Check again a week before to make sure!
Bob Frable
You are correct … and The Donald will also HOST the program this year. The ceremony will be held on December 7th but not broadcast until NEXT YEAR so Trump can include it as part of America’s 250th Anniversary. To your point, after earlier denouncing the importance of these honors, he now promises "We're going to bring it to a higher level than it ever hit." Thank GOD he was here to save them. (Trump didn’t attend the honors during his first term because several artists said they wouldn't attend out of protest. This year, he has taken over as the Kennedy Center's new chairman and fired the board of trustees, which he replaced with loyalists to ensure a successful program.)
Trump said he wanted a more active role in the selection process and was "about 98% involved" in choosing the honorees. He said he "turned down plenty" of names, saying those individuals were "too woke," or too liberal. He described the artists he announced on Wednesday, including several of his favorites, who he described as "great people." The Center is also getting some refurbishing before the ceremony … but apparently NOT the name change that he also proposed, The Trump / Kennedy Center. (That is NOT a joke.) kk
Lots of buzz this past week about the new Beatles Anthology 4 release, coming November 21st, “just in time for this year's Christmas gift-giving” schedule. (Personally, I was hoping for a 60th Anniversary “Rubber Soul” box set … you’ve kind of got to wonder what other “gems” they may have unearthed in the intervening years to warrant a fourth Anthology edition.)
According to the official press release, Anthology 2025 is “the ultimate story of The Beatles — told through a unique album collection, 25th Anniversary book, and Disney+ series.”

You can read our interview with John Cafferty (and hear some of their music) here:

>>>Also on 8/19/65, The Yardbirds begin their first US tour (kk)
And because I am reading Jim McCarty's book "Nobody Told Me!" I have to take note that Jimmy Page had not yet entered the band. (He is in this photo) and the tour only consisted of two concerts and a private showing as their manager had messed up the Visas. They had visitors’ visas, not working. They did use the time for recording in Memphis and NYC, but America did not get introduced to them properly.
Shelley
Fyi ... Jim McCarty uses
September, 1965 as the time they were getting ready for the tour... Don't ask
me, I wasn't taking notes then.
Interesting … look at this Yardbirds poster I found on the Heritage Auctions Page … it shows two dates in August (the 25th and 26th) and lists their individual names along with the band name. (rather unusual!)
I’ve found when researching these calendar dates you have to at LEAST triple check them, as you’ll find all kinds of discrepancies. (Since I wasn’t taking notes then either, I go with the “majority rules” factor, unless I can find something definitive and indisputable.)
If, in fact, they only played two dates, I would have to assume these were them … not August 19th OR September. (See what I mean!!!) kk
Sir Kent –
Back in 2009, The Rip Chords recorded a CD that included a tune titled "Beast Of The East."
Ironically, everything I wrote in that tune WILL be happening, tomorrow, in North Carolina. Residents are heading West while the Carolina Surfers are heading East.

And, of all things? I'm actually here to go through it!!!
Bobby Scammell, The Rip Chords
And, since we’re surfin’, here’s a nice clip sent in, remembering The Hondells … https://youtu.be/IHmRxpumtB4?si=C3wHy9BJiDeFzTj-
A reminder … The New Colony Six will be performing at The Arcada Theatre next Sunday, August 31st … the show starts at 5:00 (it’s an early start for all us old folks who’ll be attending and need to be home and in bed before 10:00!)
This will be a very special show as Ronnie Rice will open the festivities with a solo set from his Human Jukebox Days (everybody: “Day-O!”) and then come back out and join The New Colony Six for a few more songs during their headlining set.
Should make for an interesting evening of Chicago favorites …
But this wasn’t just a local thing …
The Colony placed NINETEEN songs on The National Charts between 1966 and 1974, three of which made The National Top 40 … and eight that made our Chicagoland Top Ten.
Plenty of great seats still available … some come out and join us for this very special “reunion.” (kk)
Kent,
Regarding your article about the Tokens' Intercourse album, there are a number of different CD reissues of that album available on Discogs, including one from South Korea that has both mono and stereo mixes of all the tracks. Perhaps Jay can let us know whether any of these are mastered from original tapes, or whether they're all vinyl transfers.
– Randy
Got an IMMEDIATE response to this one …
Hi Kent –
ALL vinyl transfers
Jay
